2016 NFL Draft: New York Giants Team Needs

For the first time since 2002, the New York Giants will take the field without Tom Coughlin as their head coach. Instead, that role will be filled by former offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo.

This was made possible by an extremely disappointing six-win 2015 campaign that saw the Giants finish in third place in the NFC East.

Now with McAdoo leading the charge and coming off a free-agent spending spree, the Giants enter draft season with a vast amount of holes to fill.

In continuing with this 32 article series, here's a look at the top needs for the New York Giants as well as a seven-round mock draft we ran through the FanSpeak mock draft simulator. We manually picked for New York while the picks for all other 31 teams were selected by the simulator.

1. Inside Linebacker

The Giants re-signed Jasper Brinkley in free agency. That should pretty much tell us where this team stands at inside linebacker. With Keenan Robinson slated to start as of right now, this is an absolutely huge hole for the team to fill. The good news here is that a player like Darron Lee or Reggie Ragland should be available with the 10th pick. More so than any other position. that's the direction New York must head.

2. Right Tackle

With right side of New York's line is a complete mess right now. Marshall Newhouse has been among the worst pass protecting tackles in the NFL over the past few seasons. He also started 14 games for the Giants this past season. While Eli Manning only went down 27 times, that has more to do with Ben McAdoo's system and Manning's quick release. In short, Newhouse was horrendous. If a Ronnie Stanley or Jack Conklin is available at 10, the Giants might have to look in this direction.

3. Guard

Much like Newhouse, John Jerry isn't a starter-caliber player in the NFL anymore. There was a time a few years back in Miami that he was, but that time surely has passed. And with the Giants pretty much set at center as well as on the left side, this is an area that simply needs to be addressed. Though, there's very little reason to believe New York will look in this direction early. Rather, it would be best suited finding a cheap upgrade over Jerry on the veteran market while working a mid-round pick into the fold come April.

4. Strong Safety

One could argue that Landon Collins should be playing strong safety. If that's the case, he could very well move over to that position should New York find a cover safety in the draft. The issue here is that there's no one outside of Jalen Ramsey worth a darn early in the draft. Even then, Ramsey himself is best suited to play corner. Unless the Giants retain a horrible player in Craig Dahl or hit up the weak free-agent market, strong safety is going to be a position the Giants hit on Day 2.

5. Weak/Strong Side Linebacker

The Giants could actually use new starters at all three linebacker positions. That's how bad this unit was last season. Devon Kennard and JT Thomas are not starters on good teams. Both will likely have to be replaced before the start of the regular season should the Giants be considered contenders for the NFC East title.
