In continuing with this 32 article series, here's a look at the top needs for the New York Jets as well as a seven-round mock draft we ran through the FanSpeak mock draft simulator. We manually picked for New York while the picks for all other 31 teams were selected by the simulator.
1. Quarterback
Even if the Jets re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick, they are in need of a quarterback of the future. In no world are Geno Smith or Bryce Petty the long-term solutions here. With that said, should the Jets bring back Fitzpatrick between now and the draft, this will not be the team's top need. Instead, it will be all about getting a player that can contribute immediately as the Jets look to catch up with the New England Patriots in the AFC East.
2. EDGE Rusher
Jets outside linebackers recorded a total of seven sacks last season. That's not necessarily a huge number for a team running a 3-4 scheme. It's also going to have to change if New York is going to overtake the patriots in the AFC East next season. Unfortunately, the likes of Clemson's Shaq Lawson and Eastern Kentucky's Noah Spence are unlikely to be available when the Jets pick in the first round. This will leave the team in position to have to reach for an EDGE guy or look at another position on Day 1.
3. Insider Linebacker
New York did re-sign Erin Henderson earlier this offseason, but he's nowhere near a starter-caliber inside linebacker. David Harris is also getting up there in age. More so than any other position outside of EDGE guys, inside linebacker is huge in the Jets' scheme. Simply put, the team needs to find someone that can anchor the inside for the next 5-10 years. It could come in the form of a Reggie Ragland in the first round. Though, the Jets might be forced to look outside of Day 1 for an upgrade here if he's off the board.
4. Right Tackle
Breno Giacomini is a replacement level right tackle in the NFL at this stage in his career, nothing more. The Jets also lack much in terms of high-upside young talent behind him on the depth chart. They would definitely be best served here finding someone that can both compete with Giacomini in training camp and eventually take over for him down the road. It also wouldn't hurt for the team to potentially find a long-term solution for D'Brickashaw Ferguson on the left side. Though, that might have to come at a later date.
5. Cornerback
Darrelle Revis slowed down a tad last season and isn't getting any younger. Dee Milliner has been an absolute bust since the Jets took him in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft. Meanwhile, Buster Skrine failed to really live up to expectations in his first season with the Jets after coming over from the Cleveland Browns. Add in the departure of Antonio Cromartie, and this becomes an obvious need.
