2016 NFL Draft: San Francisco 49ers Team Needs

The San Francisco 49ers are in the midst of some dramatic changes. Gone is former head coach Jim Tomsula who spent a grand total of one year in that role, leading the team to a disastrous 5-11 record in the process. He's been replaced by a talented but enigmatic offensive mind in Chip Kelly.

San Francisco's quarterback situation is unsettled with reports that Colin Kaepernick has requested a trade. Meanwhile, the team's top wide receiver from the past three seasons, Anquan Boldin, is set to become a free agent.

Still, this 49ers team does possess some solid young talent on both sides of the ball. It's going to be up to general manager Trent Baalke and Co. to put together a stellar offseason in order to improve San Francisco's chances in an ever competitive NFC West next season.

In continuing with this 32 article series, here's a look at the top needs for the San Francisco 49ers as well as a seven-round mock draft we ran through the FanSpeak mock draft simulator. We manually picked for San Francisco while the picks for all other 31 teams were selected by the simulator.

1. Wide Receiver

As mentioned above, Anquan Boldin is set to become a free agent. A report over the weekend suggested that he wants to play for a contender next year. If that's the case, the 49ers are likely out of the equation. Having led the team in receiving in each of his three seasons in San Francisco, that would be somewhat of a major loss. Outside of Boldin, the 49ers don't have a big-bodied possession receiver that can help the team out on third downs. That's also a major issue.

And while Torrey Smith may fit well as a deep threat in Chip Kelly's offense, his 33 receptions last season are not indicative of a true No. 1 receiver in the NFL. In short, San Francisco needs to find that young top-end target in the draft. That should be the team's top priority.

2. Guard

Alex Boone is set to become a free agent. He's also extremely unlikely to return to San Francisco after the two sides found themselves embroiled in multiple contract stalemates over the past few seasons. Outside of Boone, there's nothing to look at here.

San Francisco could move soon-to-be returning offensive tackle Anthony Davis inside. It could also kick 2015 draft pick Trent Brown to guard. That would settle one guard position. Though, the other side is still very much in question. Jordan Devey was among the worst starting offensive linemen in the entire NFL last season. Second-year player Brandon Thomas also doesn't seem to be the answer here.

3. Quarterback

Colin Kaepernick threw a total of six touchdowns in eight games before a combination of ineffectivness and injury forced him to the bench. Blaine Gabbert stepped in and played slightly above-average ball for the second half of the season.

With Kaepernick having requested a trade and the sample size still too small to rely on Gabbert, there's a darn good chance San Francisco will address this position in the offseason. Unfortunately for those looking for this team to add a top-end veteran starter, absolutely none exist on the free-agent market. In fact, an argument could be made that Gabbert is a better option than all but two of those set to hit the open market this week.

This leaves the draft as San Francisco's best option to add a franchise-type quarterback. With the seventh pick, there's a darn good chance one of the top-end quarterbacks — a list that includes Jared Goff, Carson Wentz and Paxton Lynch — will be available. That could be the direction Baalke and Co. go.

4. Outside Linebacker

There's little doubt that Aaron Lynch is among the best young 3-4 outside linebackers in the game. He recorded 6.5 sacks this past season but was among the league leaders in quarterback pressures, a much clearer sign of consistent pass-rush ability. Though, San Francisco needs to find a running partner for him.

Ahmad Brooks is unlikely to be back after struggling a great deal last season. Meanwhile, the likes of Corey Lemonier and Eli Harold have failed to step up in the limited action they have seen.

5. Inside Linebacker

The abrupt retirement of Patrick Willis hurt San Francisco big time last season. And while NaVorro Bowman played inspired football, he's not the same All-Pro player we saw prior to suffering that serious knee injury in the NFC Championship Game two years ago. Bowman is a likely starter at one inside linebacker spot. He's also still a highly-productive player. With that said, San Francisco doesn't have much after that.

It acquired Gerald Hodges in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings during the 2015 season — a move that could give the team a fall-back option. Still, with the top-end inside linebacker talent at the top of the draft, San Francisco could stand to make a move here. No one in their right mind would question a Myles Jack at seven.
