Week 1 of the 2013 NFL regular season is now in the books, and it didn't disappoint. From Peyton Manning's ridiculous seven-touchdown performance to Colin Kaepernick's 400-yard game, there was a lot of big events around the fantasy football world.
While there were some duds. Hello, Robert Griffin III and Calvin Johnson, there was more good than bad for those of us who decide to utilize fantasy football as an off-branch of our football experience.
Here are the top-five performances from the initial week of the season.
Note: These are my top performances. I am not going to simply run down the list of eDraft's rankings.
5. Reggie Bush, Running Back, Detroit Lions
Statistics: 21 rushes, 90 yards, four receptions, 101 yards and one touchdown (25.10 fantasy points)
Adrian Peterson wasn't the best running back on the field when the Minnesota Vikings took on the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Instead, that distinction goes to Reggie Bush, who tallied 191 total yards and nearly put up 100-plus yards both rushing and receiving. Talk about a PPR stud.
Bush ended Week 1 as the second-ranked fantasy running back behind Peterson, but he was extremely important to Detroit's "upset" victory. This is why he is on the list, while the best running back in theg game isn't. If Bush can continue these types of performances moving forward, and there is no reason to believe he can't, the Lions could be in a good position as a team. In terms of fantasy football, Bush's upside is likely as a top-five running back.
4. Anquan Boldin, Wide Receiver, San Francisco 49ers
Statistics: 13 receptions, 208 yards and one touchdown (26.80 fantasy points)
We probably should have seen this coming. With Michael Crabtree out until at least November and no other veteran receiving option, someone had to step up. Why not the receiver who literally torched the entire NFL in the playoffs last season with the Baltimore Ravens? In his first game with San Francisco, the former Pro Bowler dazzled audiences with an amazing overall performance.
Boldin put up his best single-game performance since November of 2008 when he was with the Arizona Cardinals. He tallied 13 receptions for over 200 yards and a score. While these numbers were only good enough for him to rank No. 4 among wide receivers in Week 1, they might be a sign of things to come. Simply put, Boldin and his new quarterback seem to have an amazing connection early on. Let's see if it carries on to next Sunday night against the Seattle Seahawks, a much better pass defense than San Francisco faced this past week.
3. Colin Kaepernick, Quarterback, San Francisco 49ers
Statistics: 27/29, 412 yards, seven rushes, 22 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions (30.68 fantasy points)
Yet another awe-inspiring performance from this young man. As the Green Bay Packers prepared for the read option and a ton of runs from Colin Kaepernick, the budding star picked them apart from the pocket to the tune of 400-plus yards and three scores in an impressive 49ers victory. In doing so, Kaepernick became only the fifth quarterback in the NFL during the Super Bowl era to throw for 400-plus yards with three scores and zero interceptions on opening day. Interestingly enough, Peyton Manning accomplished that same feat Thursday night.
He also made all of us who had him as a top-tier fantasy quarterback look a lot smarter than we actually are. In a normal week, Kaepernick would have been the clear No. 1 fantasy quarterback. Considering Peyton Manning's performance on Thursday night, that was seemingly impossible. As it is, Kaepernick finished right behind Manning as the No. 2 fantasy quarterback for Week 1.
2. A.J. Green, Wide Receiver, Cincinnati Bengals
Statistics: Nine receptions, 162 yards and two touchdowns (28.20 fantasy points)
Leave it to A.J. Green to put up the best game of his career against an elite Chicago Bears pass defense in his first game of the 2013 season. There were some, myself included, who thought Green would struggle in this game. Boy, were we wrong. The third-year receiver tallied two first half touchdowns and put aside any questions about whether he could actually pick his game up even more.
While it wasn't enough for Cincinnati to pull out a win a Soldier Field, Greene's performance will go a long way in cementing his status as one of the top three overall receivers in the league. In terms of fantasy production, could we be looking at the No. 1 receiver this season?
1. Peyton Manning, Quarterback, Denver Broncos
Statistics: 27/42, 462 yards, seven touchdowns and zero interceptions (46.28 fantasy points)
What a way to open the season, eh? Peyton Manning actually got off to a slow start against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night. What he did in the second half shocked the collective mind of the football community. The future Hall of Famer threw five second half touchdowns and finished the game with a NFL-record tying seven touchdowns. This performance caused many fantasy owners to literall bang their hads against their television screens, especially if they were going up against Manning this week.
Is this type of performance sustainable moving forward? That answer to that is an emphatic no.
What is sustatinable is Manning continuing to find open receivers on a consistent basis throughout the remainder of the season. The addition of Wes Welker and emergence of tight end Julius Thomas pretty much etches this in stone moving forward.
