5 Bold Predictions: AFC Championship Game

Coming off an impressive win over the favored Denver Broncos, the Baltimore Ravens will get a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship Game. The Ravens will face off against the New England Patriots. With the eminent retirement of Ray Lewis, Tom Brady will attempt to make himself the last quarterback Lewis faces. Here are five bold predictions for the AFC Championship game.

1. Anquan Boldin Will Score 2 Touchdowns and Have Over 100 Yards Receiving

Baltimore wide receiver Anquan Boldin has quietly led the Ravens in receiving yards, just slightly ahead of teammate Torry Smith. Smith is Baltimore’s deep threat and has found the end zone eight times this year. Boldin on the other hand is Baltimore’s position receiver. When these teams met earlier in the year, Smith torched the Patriots after the loss of his brother in a motorcycle accident. New England won’t get burned a second time. Expect to see a deep safety in Smith’s direction for much of the game. New England will attempt to eliminate the deep threat and the running game, which Baltimore’s relies on heavily. This will open up some passing lanes for Boldin. Expect to hear Boldin’s name called often on Sunday.

2. Aaron Hernandez and Wes Welker Will Combine for Over 200 Yards Receiving and 3 touchdowns

The injury to New England tight end Rob Gronkowski is a major blow to the Patriots chances at getting back to the Super Bowl. However teammate Aaron Hernandez played well in his absence. The Patriots have an arsenal of offensive talent and they like to spread the ball around. Last time these two teams played Wes Welker lit up the Ravens with 142 receiving yards. Baltimore will be dead set on stopping Welker and this will leave Hernandez with more one on one matchups.

3. Baltimore Defense Will Record 3 Sacks 1 Fumble Recovery and 1 Interception

The Baltimore Ravens have been playing inspirational football lately and will look to continue this trend on Sunday in the AFC championship game. The Raven’s defense likes to bring pressure on the opponents quarterback and Sunday should be no different. In the Week 3 matchup between these two squads, Baltimore blitzed Brady constantly. The Ravens have the talent to intimidate the opponent and this is what they will try to do against Brady. Linebacker Terrell Suggs is returning to his dominant form and the emergence of Paul Kruger on the defensive line makes Baltimore’s front seven one the best in the league.

4. Joe Flacco Will Throw for Over 350 Yards and at Least 2 Touchdowns

Raven’s quarterback Joe Flacco has taken much of the blame for the Raven’s struggles in the past. This comes with the territory when you are the quarterback. However when the teams is winning the quarterback gets all of the accolades. Last week the Ravens pulled off the biggest upset of the playoffs. The determined Ravens defeated the number one seed Denver Broncos. The excellent play of Flacco was a big key to the win. The Patriots have a secondary that is susceptible to pass. Expect the Ravens to attack New England’s secondary with the long ball. The deep pass is what Flacco does best.

5. Baltimore Wins on a Last Second Field Goal

While a last second field goal to win the game may not be such a bold prediction, the fact that it will be the Baltimore kicker is. The first time these squads did battle, Baltimore kicker Justin Tucker won the game for the Ravens on a last second 27 yard field goal. Most NFL fans believe New England will be representing the AFC in the Super Bowl but there’s no reason to believe Tucker can’t do it again. Both teams are evenly matched and there is little evidence to say this game won’t come down to a last second field goal.
