5 Most Surprising Fantasy Football Quarterbacks Through 5 Weeks

1. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers

Statistics: 1,610 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions (108.40 points)

Despite concerns over an increased amount of mistakes over the past two weeks, Rivers still finds himself as a top-five fantasy quarterback through the first five weeks of the season. He's tallied over 400 passing yards in each of his last two games and is on pace for career highs in yards and touchdowns. While things will get a bit more difficult this upcoming week against a vastly improved Indianapolis Colts defense, Rivers has a favorable schedule moving forward. He'll take on weak pass defenses in the form of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos in the next three games. This seems to indicate that Rivers will remain a viable QB1 option up until mid November.

2. Alex Smith, Kansas City Chiefs

Statistics: 1,202 passing yards, 161 rushing yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions (86.18 points)

Smith is now on pace for over 4,200 total yards and 22 touchdowns, both of which would be career highs. He has more rushing yards than Colin Kaepernick and Cam Newton. He's also the 11th-ranked fantasy quarterback through five weeks. Raise your hand if you had Smith as a solid QB1 option heading into the season. I didn't think so. With a home game coming up against the Oakland Raiders, you can expect another solid fantasy week for this veteran quarterack as he looks to lead the Chiefs to an equally surprising 6-0 start.

3. Sam Bradford, St. Louis Rams

Statistics: 1,315 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions (89.20 points)

Has Bradford been a good quarterback this season? Obviously not. That's really not the point here, as Bradford has put up the necessary numbers (mostly in garbage time) to be the ninth-ranked fantasy quarterback through five weeks. He's on pace for 4,200 yards and 32 touchdowns in an under-the-radar fantasy performance thus far. The bad news here is that this performance will not stand the test of time. Bradford must go up against the Houston Texans, Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers in six of his next seven games. That equates to big-time struggles moving forward.

4. Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears

Statistics: 1,368 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions (87.92 points)

With five total turnovers in his last two games, Cutler may indeed be reverting back to old form. These inconsistencies may lead many to believe that the Bears quarterback was nothing more than a fantasy fluke over the course of the first three weeks of the season. It's also not a coincidence that these two lackluster performances came against improved defenses in the form of the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints. Cutler is still on pace for 30-plus touchdowns and nearly 4,400 yards this season. The good news here is that Chicago goes up against two lackluster pass defenses in the form of the New York Giants and Washington Redskins in its next two games.

5. Terrelle Pryor, Oakland Raiders

Statistics: 845 passing yards, 229 rushing yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions (68.70 points)

Everything that Pryor has done in his first four starts of the season indicates that he's the Raiders' quarterback of the future. He has a .500 record in those four starts and hasn't thrown an interception since Oakland's Week 1 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. He has nearly 1,100 total yards in just four starts, which is an indication that he's more than a game manager. Despite missing a game due to a concussion, Pryor is has still been a mid-tier QB2 option through the first five weeks of the season.
