A Look Back at Kenny Stabler's Career

The sad news spread Thursday afternoon, when it was reported former Oakland Raiders quarterback Kenny “The Snake” Stabler passed away Wednesday from complications with colon cancer; something he battled quietly after being diagnosed in February of this year.

The Snake was the epitome of a Raider and is known for his unique character alongside his remarkable play in his 15-year career.  He was one of a kind, a tough individual and an absolute badass.  He has always been widely admired and respected amongst his peers and has been a fan favorite since the day he put on the silver and black.

In honor of the great Kenny Stabler, here’s a look back at his historic career in the NFL.

Stabler was drafted in the second round of the 1968 draft by Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders, but didn’t start for the silver and black until 1970.  He is forever known as one of the most accurate passers of the 1970’s and one of the best left-handed passers of all time.  He had a 15-year career, but is most known for his 10 years with the Raiders.

He twice led the league in completion percentage and touchdowns, and earned NFL MVP honors in 1974.  Stabler was known as being clutch in tough situations , something his former coach John Madden remembers fondly.

Stabler was also a four-time Pro Bowler, and led the Raiders to the playoffs six times in his ten years with the silver and black.

The Snake also led the Raiders to their first Super Bowl victory against the Minnesota Vikings in 1977.  Oakland defeated the Vikings 32-14.  That season, Stabler was the top rated passer in the AFC with 2,737 yards, 27 touchdowns, and a completion percentage of 66.7.

Stabler won the hearts of Raiders fans not only from the 70’s, but years following through stories, and highlights of his play.

The Raiders have been known to be involved in some of the most historical games in NFL history, and Stabler was a part of some of the most iconic games and plays; “The Holy Roller,” “Sea of Hands,” and “Ghost to the Post” are a few, and of course “The Immaculate Reception” which robbed Stabler and the Raiders of a Super Bowl appearance.

Stabler will go down as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game, yet has not been inducted to the NFL Hall of Fame, something that has already been questioned for some time now.

Not only is he known for his play on the field, but for his autobiography titled “Snake” featuring accounts of his life on and off the field.

Stabler was only 69-years-old when he passed, but his legacy will live on forever not only in the hearts of Raider Nation, but NFL fans alike.  Not only was he a remarkable athlete, but his character was one of a kind and set him aside from the rest.
