Advanced Fantasy Football Statistics: The Running Backs

Yesterday I focused on the quarterback position. Today I am going to take a look at the top fantasy running backs and how they perform in a specific category.

Fantasy points per touch.

Player Team Rushes Receptions Touches Points Average
C.J. Spiller Buffalo  161 37 198 177.9 0.899
Adrian Peterson Minnesota 289 38 327 266.3 0.814
Marshawn Lynch Seattle 271 19 290 210.2 0.725
Ray Rice Baltimore 230 55 285 199.8 0.701
Frank Gore San Francisco 232 25 257 178.9 0.696
Arian Foster Houston 325 36 361 243.3 0.674
Stevan Ridley New England 252 6 258 171.6 0.665
Michael Turner Atlanta 203 15 218 143.6 0.659
Alfred Morris Washington 280 8 288 184.7 0.642
Doug Martin Tampa Bay 273 38 311 228.7 0.634

It's interesting to see that Doug Martin, while the No. 3 overall fantasy running back, is barely a RB1 option when it comes to points per touch. I wonder how much of this has to do with the way Tampa Bay is utilizing his carries during a game. Meanwhile, it shouldn't come as a surprise that C.J. Spiller ranks first  and Adrian Peterson second in this category. The former is averaging over seven yards per touch, while Peterson is still gaining over six yards a rush.

The following represents a list of some of the worst starting running backs in this category.

Matt Forte: 0.567

Shonn Greene: 0.542

Steven Jackson: 0.540

BenJarvus Green-Ellis: 0.528
