It seems every few hours John Elway is bringing in a big defensive free agent to the team, as it was just announced the Broncos have signed defensive end DeMarcus Ware this morning. It marks the third marquee signing in the past 24 hours as Denver is doing all they can to give Peyton Manning one last Super Bowl.
Ware was cut by the Dallas Cowboys at the start of free agency and just a day later, has signed a three-year deal, worth $30 million total and $20 million guaranteed. He will make $13M this season, which is more than the Cowboys were set to pay him before his release. Now Ware enters a situation where he walks onto the AFC Champions from last year as he attempts to win a Super Bowl.
Ware spent his entire nine-year career with the Cowboys, spending much of that time as their outside linebacker before defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin made the switch to the 4-3. Ware was outstanding for eight consecutive seasons with eight sacks or more, including seven straight years of 10+ sacks. But injuries and the switch to defensive end hurt Ware as he finished with a career low six sacks in 2013.
But while Ware will be playing for another 4-3 in Denver, he is in a better situation than anything he had in Dallas. Ware will benefit from being next to Von Miller who will attract the double teams that Ware always drew with the Cowboys. It will help free Ware up to get into the backfield and destroy quarterbacks like Alex Smith, Philip Rivers and Tom Brady. As long as Ware stays healthy, he is in an improved situation where he can get after the quarterback freely and potentially get back to the 8+ sack seasons of old.
For the Broncos, they are now going all out to try and win this upcoming season and said Manning out on top, just like Elway did when he retired. Every move the Broncos have made so far this offseason by signing Ware, Aqib Talib and T.J. Ward is with the entire focus on 2014. As long as everyone stays healthy, we are talking about the favorite to win the Super Bowl next year. Manning, Demaryius Thomas, Wes Welker, Ward, Miller, Talib are all together for one shot.
If all goes well, Manning could walk off into the sunset just like Elway did and it will all be worth it. But injuries happen every season and if the Broncos can’t win next season and Manning is ready for retirement, this team is sunk in an awful situation for the foreseeable future.
