Analyzing the Top-10 Free Agent Offensive Linemen

This is a very good group of offensive lineman and a lot of them will get big contracts. Linemen have the benefit of never really being able to saturate the market since they are always in such high demand and so hard to find five quality ones. This group will make it a lot easier on teams during free agency.

10. Justin Blalock

Blalock is very big for a guard. This inhibits him some in his run blocking because he has trouble getting to the next level and makes it difficult for him to move in space. He also struggles moving defensive linemen off the line of scrimmage. However, his pass blocking is above average. His size is a benefit in his pass blocking as it allows him to have a very solid base against bigger defensive linemen.

9. Todd Herremans

Herremans is a very good offensive linemen but lacks a lot in his pass blocking. His run blocking is extremely good and his athleticism allows him to do things that a lot of other linemen aren’t able to. This is extremely helpful because guards typically need to be more athletic than tackles.

8. Jermey Parnell

Parnell wasn’t a starter for the Cowboys and didn’t get the majority of the snaps at right tackle but when he was in he really showed what he’s got. Parnell is good at both pass blocking and run blocking. When he gets the opportunity to be a full time starter I absolutely expect him to be one of the better right tackles in the league.

7. Joe Barksdale

One of Barksdale’s best assets are his hands. He has learned how to use them extremely well in pass protection. He’s not the most athletic lineman but he has a lot of strength and it shows when he run blocks.

6. Stefen Wisniewski

Wisniewski is best at run blocking. He gets off the ball quickly and is good at using leverage against defenders. His pass blocking is lacking and is something that he needs to work on wherever he goes next. He is too aggressive and is often times off balance when engaging the defender.

5. Rodney Hudson

Hudson was one of the best centers in the NFL last season. His proficiency in all aspects is aided by his athleticism. Not only does he pass block well and run block well, he is able to block on screen passes well too. Out of all the centers in the league, Hudson was probably the best blocking on screen passes. That shows how versatile and athletic he is.

4. Doug Free

After his third year at right tackle Free has become one of the best in the game. In the run game he’s able to turn defenders and can move the line of scrimmage. In pass blocking he’s learned how to use his hands much more efficiently and has showed patience in letting the defender come to him rather than lunging for the defender.

3. Orlando Franklin

Franklin is one of the biggest tackles in the NFL and moves extremely well for his size. He’s not excellent at any one thing but he’s also not bad at anything either. His run blocking isn’t out of this world and neither is his pass blocking, but he gets the job done much more often than not in both areas.

2. Bryan Bulaga

Bulaga’s best attribute are his hands in pass blocking. He’s extremely violent with them and allows defenders to come to him. He’ll get beat but a speed rusher every now and again but not very often. His run blocking isn’t great but it’s not awful. He has trouble in space and getting up to the next level.

1. Mike Iupati

Mike Iupati is your typical road grader type of offensive lineman. He absolutely runs people over in the run game and can move the line of scrimmage. His downside, however, is his pass blocking. A lot of times he tries to bully defenders in pass blocking a gets too aggressive. This gets him beat a lot in pass blocking.
