When the Arizona Cardinals traded for Matt Barkley just days before roster cut downs, it was an ominous sign for Logan Thomas chances of making the team. Now the speculation is official with the Cardinals releasing Thomas on Saturday.
Thomas, the 120th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, had all the raw tools to be a franchise quarterback and Bruce Arians was just the right coach to mold him into a good player. But despite playing in two games last year, it became clear Arizona "had enough" of the 24-year-old.
He continued to have major issues with his accuracy and touch, it got to the point where the Cardinals also considered just keeping two quarterbacks on the roster. It's also important to note that when Arizona was in the playoffs, the trusted Ryan Lindley more in a meaningful game than Thomas.
The fact that his last few days in Arizona ended with Barkley replacing him are another tough pill to swallow. Arians loves to throw the football deep down field and have a quarterback with arm strength, Barkley's arm would be better classified as spaghetti than a rocket.
At one point during his time with Virginia Tech, some believed Thomas had the makings of a number one pick. But after a season of regression, his stock plummeted and it only grew worse from there.
Perhaps a team will see him and think they can mold him but developing quarterbacks isn't easy. Even the projects who work out need hundreds or thousands of reps to work on things and get them right. Thomas right now is a third-string quarterback at best and the practice reps to improve wouldn't be there, no matter where he goes.
