At 4-1 on the season and with a two-game lead in the NFC West, the Arizona Cardinals are in prime position to capture their first division title since 2009.
Winning by an average of 20 points per game and putting up the most points in the NFL through five weeks doesn't seem to be enough here. An always creative general manager, Steve Keim added another veteran of worth on Monday by signing pass rusher Dwight Freeney for the remainder of the year:
Freeney, a 13-year NFL veteran, put up 3.5 sacks and 40 quarterback hurries last season for the San Diego Chargers. And despite his advanced age of 35, the seven-time Pro Bowler appears to have something left in the tank. Pro Football Focus graded him out as the seventh-best pure pass-rushing 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL last season.
It will be interesting to see what type of role Freeney plays for the Cardinals over the course of the team's final 11 games. But it's safe to say he will at least be relied on as a pass-rush specialist. Despite a 4-1 record, Arizona has racked up just eight sacks in five games.
Leave it to Keim and head coach Bruce Arians to find a weakness and address it after a 42-17 win over the hapless Detroit Lions on Sunday.
