Baltimore Ravens Place Dennis Pitta on Injured Reserve

Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta has played in a grand total of seven games since the team's Super Bowl title back in February of 2013.

Since then, he's gone through two lengthy rehabs from fractured hips.

After attempting to make a comeback this season, and with doctors advising the 30-year-old tight end that it's not in his best interest to play football, the Ravens placed him on injured reserve on Wednesday:

It's a tough blow for a one-promising tight end. It could also spell the end of Pitta's career. From the reports that came out on Wednesday, it appears the doctors are not advising him just to sit out this year, but to never play again.

Pitta addressed the situation after head coach John Harbaugh made the announcement late Wednesday morning:

This comes on the heels of Pitta himself saying that nothing would really change regarding his hip if he wasn't able to make a comeback in 2015:

"I would like to think that if I can’t make it back this year, then what’s going to change next year? For me, in my mind, it’s kind of [like] I’m working to get back this year, and if I can’t, then that might be it. But that’s certainly undecided. I don’t really know how to answer.

Pitta continued, via SB Nation:

"She’s (Pitta's wife) not really excited about me being out here. She was nervous last night and just didn’t want to get a call that something went wrong today. Like I said, she supports me in everything that I’m doing, and I’m lucky to have her."

In Pitta's last full season back in 2012, he put up 61 receptions for 694 yards and seven touchdowns. The former fourth-round pick added 14 receptions and three scores during the team's Super Bowl run.

This can't be too much of a surprise to the Ravens. They added Maxx Williams in the second round of this year's draft under the assumption Pitta might not be able to work his way on the field.

Still, it's a rather harsh day for both the tight end and his team.
