Jared Cook, St. Louis Rams
Statistics: Five receptions, 44 yards and zero touchdowns (4.40 fantasy points)
After putting up 141 yards on seven catches against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1, Cook has tallied a total of six receptions and 54 yards in the Rams' last two games. That's not exactly living up to his contract, nor is it living up to expectations set forth by fantasy owners after the first week of the season. Cook is still the sixth-ranked fantasy tight end through three weeks, but he's going to need to improve on his last two performances. That starts Thursday night against the San Francisco 49ers.
Kyle Rudolph, Minnesota Vikings
Statistics: Five receptions, 28 yards and zero touchdowns (2.80 fantasy points)
While Rudolph's performance can be classified as a "dud," we could all see this coming a mile away. Going up against a Cleveland Browns defense that excels against fantasy tight ends, and doing so with Christian Ponder wasn't necessarily the best mix for those who own Rudolph. The former second-round pick was targeted a total of eight times and came away with under three fantasy points. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that Ponder, not Rudolph, is the problem here. Overall, he ranks 18th among tight ends in fantasy points through three weeks.
Owen Daniels, Houston Texans
Statistics: Five receptions, 29 yards and zero touchdowns (2.90 fantasy points)
Yet another tight end who just didn't put up the necessary yardage numbers to be viable in standard leagues, but did accumulate enough receptions to provide "some" value in PPR leagues. Daniels was targeted nine times by Matt Schaub and came away with less than 30 receiving yards. People, that's really hard to do. Daniels may rank fifth among tight ends in fantasy points through three weeks, but he has tallied less yards in those games than Jimmy Graham put up against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3. Think about that for a second.
Jermaine Gresham, Cincinnati Bengals
Statistics: Four receptions, 27 yards, zero touchdowns and one fumble (0.70 fantasy points)
After putting up 11 receptions for over 100 yards in his first two games, Gresham struggled big time against a Green Bay Packers defense that hasn't had a lot of recent success against tight ends. His 27 receiving yards and one fumble were strong indicators that Green Bay was focusing more on stopping A.J. Green and Cincinnati's outside passing game. As it is, Gresham still leads all regular NFL tight ends with a 83.3 percent catch rate through three weeks. He still only ranks 28th among tight ends in fantasy points due to a lack of red zone opportunities (zero touchdowns) on one target.
Tyler Eifert, Cincinnati Bengals
Statistics: One reception, seven yards and zero touchdowns (0.70 fantasy points)
If you decided to run both Gresham and Eifert on to the field this past week, I am sorry. The indicators were there for them to have success, but it just didn't happen. This rookie first-round pick was targeted just one time against Green Bay, as Andy Dalton looked more to the running back and outside receiving threats. While being targeted so little moving forward isn't sustainable, Eifert is going to be a hit-or-miss proposition for the rest of his rookie season. He ranks 25th among tight ends in fantasy points through three weeks.
