Biggest Surprises From Day 2 of the 2014 NFL Draft

Biggest Surprises From Day 2 of the 2014 NFL Draft

There weren’t a lot of surprises on Day 2 of this year’s NFL draft. However, there were two moves that really stood out in my mind and surprised me. The biggest surprise was the New England Patriots drafting Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo with the 62nd overall pick in the third round.

First of all, I didn’t expect Garoppolo to fall that far. Second of all, I didn’t expect the Patriots to take a quarterback when they have Tom Brady as their obvious starter for at least a few more years and Ryan Mallett as their backup waiting in the wings. If they didn’t already have Mallett, who everyone thought would be the eventual successor to Brady, then I would love this move. But now to have Brady, Garoppolo, and Mallett, what’s the plan?

The next biggest surprise was the San Francisco 49ers drafting Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde. The reason this surprised me is the same reason the Garoppolo pick surprised me. The 49ers currently have Frank Gore, Marcus Lattimore, Kendall Hunter, and LaMichael James on their roster.

Now they add Hyde to the mix which makes five running backs. There were talks of trading James but that just doesn’t seem likely at this point. It seems more likely that they’ll just end up cutting him. My first thought when I saw this pick was that they don’t have as much confidence in Lattimore’s knee as they’re letting on.

Another possibility is that they realize Gore only has maybe one good season left in him and once he’s gone they’ll have a very young and powerful two-headed monster running game.

Some other surprises from Day 2 were Notre Dame defensive tackle Louis Nix III slipping all the way down to the Houston Texans at the 83rd overall pick. This is really surprising because watching the 2012 tape of Nix you would think he would be getting picked sometime in the first round.

But after suffering a knee injury and being slowed down and out of shape in the 2013 season, his stock obviously dropped. I always thought he would eventually get back to his 2012 form and taking a chance on that with a draft pick would be well worth it. If he can regain his form, he would’ve been worth a first round pick.

The Philadelphia Eagles were a team that surprised me. Their secondary was pitiful last year and through three rounds they have yet to address that. Instead they have reached on a pass rusher (also an important need for them) in the first round and then took two wide receivers on Day 2. Luckily for them there is still some very good secondary talent still on the board for them
