Blair Walsh Misses All Three Field Goals, Preseason Struggles Continue

Less than a month after the Minnesota Vikings gave kicker Blair Walsh a signature of confidence, signing him to a four-year, $13 million extension, we are now inching towards a very short contract extension. On Saturday against the Oakland Raiders, Walsh missed all three field goal attempts and an extra point, further adding to his kicking woes in the preseason.

Walsh missed a 35, 38 and 49-yard field goal on the night. The miss from 49 and 35 were wide right, while the missed 38 yarder was wide left. He has now missed four-of-six field goal attempts during the preseason. Walsh is also the Vikings' kickoff man, though it is hard to judge his average distance on kickoffs given many NFL teams want their kickers to allow the opposing team a chance to return it, so they can see special teams players get live repetitions.

As of now, it seems Walsh is in no danger of losing his job just three games into the preseason. @JoshMenschNFL made an excellent point that Minnesota is in the midst of a long snapper competition, which could lead to some of Walsh's woes. Part of kicking is having the rhythym and timing down, different long snappers hurts the precise timing. So the competition between Cullen Loeffler and Kevin McDermott, can have an impact on Walsh.

But if the issues continue and Walsh struggles to make even 60 percent of his field goal attempts, he could be out of a job rather quickly in the regular season. With the help over OvertheCap.com's contract calculator tool, we can see that Minnesota would save over $600K by cutting Walsh.

If that happens, Minnesota could bring in veteran Jay Feely to compete for the job. Feely is the top veteran kicker on the market, with Alex Henery's failed stint in Philadelphia and Detroit making him a distant second. Whoever winds up as the Vikings' kicker this season should have fantasy value thanks to an offense with Adrian Peterson and Teddy Bridgewater.
