Reporters covering the Green Bay Packers delivered a surprise this week when it was revealed Packers' right tackle Bryan Bulaga returned to practice this week after he sprained his MCL and tore his meniscus during practice on Sept. 17. Now Bulaga's status has taken an even more positive turn with the news he is expected to play on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams.
Not long after Bulaga's injury on Sept. 17, it was expected that he would miss the next six weeks. Don Barclay was thrust into a starting role at right tackle and things had gone very poorly. Barclay has allowed 21 pressures in just three starts this season, an alarming number given Aaron Rodgers ability to make his offensive line look better.
Packers' coach Mike McCarthy told reporters on Friday when asked if he was optimistic Bulalga would play, "So far, so good. Yes." It would be especially great news given Green Bay will face a Rams' defense that is second in the NFL with 17 sacks on the year.
It will be key to watch Bulaga if he plays on Sunday, if he suffers any setbacks or if he is physically limited during the game. This is a very rapid turnaround time, so there certainly would be some increased risk.
If Bulaga is good to go, the massive upgrade at right tackle will provide a major boost in pass protection for Rodgers and help the running game, which is great news for Eddie Lacy.
