Buffalo Bills Release Matt Cassel

The Buffalo Bills have decided on their final depth chart at quarterback, keeping E.J. Manuel as the backup quarterback over Matt Cassel. Cassel, who the Bills traded a 2015 fifth-round and 2016 seventh-round pick for him and a 2016 sixth-round pick, just never impressed in his short time with the Bills.

Cassel, 33, spent his past two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, where he was quickly surpassed on the depth chart. Buffalo gave him an opportunity to win the starting job but he was unable to seize it, though more concerning is that he couldn't beat Manuel for the backup spot.

Perhaps some team will look at him as a cheap backup on the minimum, but he may have to wait with the amount of quarterbacks being released today. Cassel's abilities have greatly diminished and he can't be trusted to be more than spot-starter on a desperate team, but we also see the Cleveland Browns ready to start Josh McCown in Week 1.
