We now know why the Carolina Panthers made the move to acquire Jared Allen from the Chicago Bears on Monday. After suffering a hamstring injury in the team's win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, star defensive end Charles Johnson was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return on Tuesday:
It's a pretty big blow to a 3-0 Panthers squad that has relied a great deal on superior play from its defense through the first three weeks of the season.
Johnson, the Panthers top pass rusher, is out a minimum of eight weeks. Considering he racked up 52.5 sacks from 2010-2014, this is a pretty major loss for Ron Rivera's squad. And despite optimism that Allen can make an immediate impact, there has to be some sort of a transition for the veteran from the Bears 3-4 scheme to the Panthers 4-3 base.
