Brandon Weeden performed at a decent clip for the Dallas Cowboys in their loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, completing 22-of-26 passes for 232 yards with zero touchdowns and an interception. In fact, he now holds the franchise record for most consecutive completions. That's absurd.
However, Weeden and the Cowboys offense struggled a great deal down the stretch. This afforded a high-power Atlanta Falcons offense the ability to come back from a two-score deficit to win 39-28.
Once Tony Romo went down with a collarbone injury in Week 2 — an injury that will keep him out until at least Week 11 — Dallas made a point of going out there and adding a veteran. That veteran came in the form of Matt Cassel.
Less than one week after he was acquired from the Buffalo Bills, Cassel seems to be picking up the Cowboys offense at a rapid clip.
He's (Cassel) working hard at it," Garrett said Monday, via The Dallas Morning News. "He's a smart guy. He's an experienced guy. It comes to him quickly ... He can speak the language. He's getting more and more comfortable saying it. He's run a lot of these plays. He knows these concepts. As much as anything else, it's learning the terminology and learning the nuances of the system."
That sounds like a guy that could easily pick up the nuances enough to see action within the next week or two. In this, there's a decent chance Cassel will be active as Weeden's backup against the New Orleans Saints next week. And if Weeden struggles against a bad defense, the possibility opens up that Cassel could be inserted into the lineup. He offers a much better floor than his veteran counterpart and has had actual success starting in the past.
Remember, Weeden holds the longest active losing streak among NFL starters at nine. That's not something the Cowboys should be comfortable with should they lose next week.
ESPN's Adam Schefter suggested over the weekend that there are people within league circles that believe Cassel will be starting over Weeden sooner rather than later. It's possibe this could come following the team's Week 5 bye.
