In a clear sign that Tony Romo will likely play this week against the Miami Dolphins, the team released quarterback Brandon Weeden.
Weeden, a first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns back in 2012, was named the Cowboys' starter when Romo went down with a collarbone injury Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Weeden proceeded to lose all three of his starts under center, throwing one touchdown compared to two interceptions while leading the Cowboys to a total of 54 points during that span.
He was benched in favor of Matt Cassel, who has started each of the past four games — all losses.
Now 2-7 on the season, Dallas needs to find a way to run off a big winning streak with Romo returning to action. This move indicates that he's good to go.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys also sent backup running back Christine Michael packing on Tuesday. The former second-round pick was acquired from the Seattle Seahawks for a seventh-round pick prior to the start of the regular season.
Even with Joseph Randle's off-field issues and subsequent release, Michael was unable to see much action. He attempted just 15 rushes in five games with the team. Darren McFadden is now the unqestioned every-down back in Dallas.
