Current Washington Redskins Starting Offense

Current Washington Redskins Starting Offense

The Washington Redskins are coming off an extremely disappointed 2013 season, where the offense was much the same as in 2012, where they made the playoffs. This offseason was an active one for the Redskins, as they added weapons on both sides of the ball. Some, like DeSean Jackson and Andre Roberts, could find themselves in the starting lineup come the start of the season. The offensive line is a huge questions mark for the Redskins, were new names occupy a few of the starting spots. However, this lineup should not change drastically before the start of the season.

New starter:  DeSean Jackson

Maybe the biggest signing in the entire league this offseason, Jackson found his way to his former NFC East rival. The Redskins needed a consistent deep threat not named Pierre Garcon and they found arguably one of the NFL’s best deep threats. With Jackson in the fold, Robert Griffin III should have a plethora of options. He can look short for another new signing, Andre Roberts, or go long with Jackson. The Redskins’ wide receiving corps received a huge boost with the Jackson signing.

Area of Improvement

The Redskins’ offensive line was subject to much criticism last season, after Griffin III was attacked by opposing defenses all seasons. This year, the right side of the line looks the weakest, especially at right tackle , where Tyler Polumbus regressed in 2013. He has the potential to be a consistent starter on this team, but the Redskins may not wait to see. Right tackle may be a position the Redskins look for with the 34th pick in the draft. There are many question marks on the offensive line, like Shawn Lauvao at left guard, but the Redskins believe they are better on the line after this offseason. Cutting center Will Montgomery was the first step to the revamping the line, but the process may be ongoing.

Potential breakout star: Jordan Reed

Reed had a strong rookie campaign last year, catching 45 passes for 499 yards and three touchdowns. Reed has speed and height, two attributes that teams salivate over when looking for a tight end. These attributes were not in full display last year, as the Redskins’ passing game was weak last year, with a struggling offensive line and an ailing quarterback. With a healthy Robert Griffin III, a retooled line and two more weapons of offense, Reed should have more space to work with. Thus, Reed should see a more productive season.

On his way out: Chris Chester

Chester struggled on the Redskins line last season and, at 31, could be fighting for his job this offseason. Chester has a few younger candidates behind him, who if given the chance, could slip in the role and produce. Josh LeRibeus, Adam Gettis and Maurice Hurt all could see time at right guard this season. It seems the Redskins will have a short leash with Chester, so don’t be surprised to see either of the three on the line in 2014.
