Dallas Cowboys Scouting Notebook: Will Sutton

Position: Defensive Tackle

Height: 6’0”

Weight: 303

How He Fits the Cowboys

Despite the decline in his level of play, Sutton would fit right in at the three technique tackle position that the Cowboys currently have an opening at. Much like Aaron Donald who has been mocked to the Cowboys more than any other prospect, Sutton is a bit undersized in terms of height. He is only 6’ which makes it a bit easier to throw over him.

The great thing about Sutton is the fact that much like many of the defensive tackles in this draft; he is a plug and play guy. With the likeliness that Jason Hatcher isn’t going to return, Dallas will need to make a selection in this draft to address it.

How He Impacts the Cowboys

Sutton will make as big of an impact as Hatcher did this past year, provided that he gets back to his playing weight from 2012. During that season he recorded double digit sacks and 23.5 tackles for loss. He was a huge disruptor for that defense.

In 2013 his decline in production was big. Recording only four sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss, there seemed to be something with his technique or something more that changed. Sutton did play at a heavier weight in 2013 that could have hampered his explosiveness. Getting back to his 2012 weight and working with Rod Marinelli will definitely improve his game.

What Sutton Does Well

Will Sutton moves extremely well for a man his size.  Playing over 300 pounds you wouldn’t expect him to move with that kind of burst but you do expect the power. Despite putting on the extra weight in 2013 he still played with great athleticism.

Sutton is also a good pass rusher. Despite the decline in numbers, many should expect to have similar success that Hatcher made. Disruption will be the main key for his success, which in turn will help his teammates.

What Sutton Struggles With

Another reason for the decline in 2013 could be Sutton’s lack of technique. At many times during the season it seemed he was relying on what he does so well a bit much. With a lack of technique the better offensive lineman can combat him. Working with Marinelli would be huge for him, just look at what he did with George Selvie.

Many teams could be hesitant to take Sutton early on because of his lack of height and length. However, despite that issue he does use it well. It may be that his lack of technique on top of his size may magnify the issue.
