David Johnson Impresses in Arizona Cardinals Debut

It was all about another Johnson this past week in the desert with the Arizona Cardinals signing veteran running back Chris Johnson off the street. However, a rookie with the same last name is the one that impressed in substantial playing time in his NFL debut against the San Diego Chargers Saturday night.

Rookie third-round pick David Johnson, who had been slowed down by a hamstring injury this summer, was pretty darn solid in his first professional action. The first-year player from Northern Iowa carried the ball 13 times for 66 yards as Bruce Arians and company gave him a significant look throughout the evening. Outside of averaging 5.1 yards per attempt, the fact that Arizona kept Johnson in on third down multiple times throughout the game has to be a good sign. Doing so with Carson Palmer still on the field could be telling. After all, there had been concerns about Johnson's blocking ability.

Chris Johnson didn't play in the game. Meanwhile, Andre Ellington put up 12 yards on just two rushes. In reality, the Cardinals wanted to showcase what the younger Johnson could do with the first-team offense. And by all accounts, he was darn impressive.

While it's way too early to even think about the rookie getting consistent touches during the regular season, we definitely should monitor his playing time in the Cardinals final two preseason games.
