Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins entered Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with 42 receptions for 578 yards and three scores in five games.
After putting up 10 catches for 148 yards and two scores in a 31-20 win over Jacksonville, Hopkins is on pace to come darn close to putting up record numbers.
Said pace has him at 139 receptions for 1,936 yards and 13 touchdowns — numbers that would rank Hopkins' 2015 season among the all-time greats. In fact, that reception total would place him four behind Marvin Harrison's record of 143 set in 2002. That total of 1,936 yards would also place him just 28 yards behind Calvin Johnson's single-season record.
What's amazing about this is the fact that he's doing this with less-than-stellar quarterback play. And while Brian Hoyer had a tremendous outing on Sunday, he's not the type of signal caller you'd expect to help a receiver put up record-setting numbers.
With the afternoon slate of games and both nationally televised matchups still remaining this week, Hopkins finds himself as the top fantasy receiver by a good 20 points. Considering we've seen ridiculous fantasy performances from multiple receivers this season, that stat is telling.
And from a DFS perspective, Hopkins has staked claim to being a must start no matter what his price tag is. The only other player in the NFL that can say the same thing is New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, who plays a position where elite performers are few and far between.
