Denver Broncos rookie fourth-round pick Devontae Booker may have put up only 11 yards on four attempts in his preseason debut against the Chicago Bears. That's fine and dandy, but it appears that he's already a notch ahead of Ronnie Hillman on the team's depth chart.
"During the Denver Broncos’ training camp practice Saturday, rookie Devontae Booker slid in to rep with the first-string offense, behind C.J. Anderson, ahead of Ronnie Hillman," Mike Klis of 9 News Denver reported on Sunday.
This could have wide-ranging ramifications when it comes to the fantasy football world. Hillman, who is coming off a 2015 campaign that saw him put up nearly 1,000 total yards and seven scores, was being relied on as a late-round handcuff option with C.J. Anderson. If he's now below Booker on the depth chart, that's going to limit Hillman's fantasy upside in 2016. More than that, Booker, a mid-round pick from Utah, becomes a solid re-draft option.
Booker put up nearly 3,400 total yards and 23 touchdowns in two seasons with the Utes. He is seen as someone capable of handling the primary running back duties. Though, issues in pass protection could very well limit his action as a rookie. Even then, anyone existing behind Anderson on the Broncos' depth chart should be considered a bench option in 12-team leagues.
While far from being a lock to be the Broncos' primary backup, it's going to be important to keep an eye on Booker during the remainder of the preseason. Should he see more action ahead of Hillman, especially in preseason action, it will tell us a story of a player that could make a solid impact as a rookie.
