Draft Dissection : Dante Fowler

Height : 6'3"

Weight : 260

From: St. Petersburg, Florida.

Named to the All-SEC Second Team by the media.

Selected to the College Football News All-Sophomore team.

Named the Athlon Sports National Defensive Player of the Week and the SEC Defensive Player of the Week following the Tennessee game, in which he had three tackles-for-loss, one sack, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Led the team with 10.5 tackles-for-loss and ranked second with 3.5 sacks in 2013.

Has 2.5 sacks and nine quarterback hurries entering Week 8 vs Missouri.

Strengths

Fowler is outlandishly athletic for his size. He has a burst that does not go unnoticed, arms like long, big tree branches, and speed that, once again, someone his size should not have. Yes, all of these traits don't necessarily compare to Jadeveon Clowney, but they are still very impressive.

In the GIFs below, you can see that Fowler shows his impressive burst to force Tennessee quarterback Justin Worley to throw off his back foot leading to an interception by Venron Hargreaves III. It is not usual when you see a big EDGE guy chase down a quarterback, who used to be a running back, and get the leading block for a fumble recovery touchdown.

One thing Fowler has taken a step forward this year is his hand usage. In 2013, he would rely on his superior strength and athleticism to beat opposing linemen and that did not work most of the time for him. Now, when he gets a half step on the lineman, he uses a a club/counter type of pass-rushing move that he has seemingly become comfortable using.

Another asset that Fowler has added has been bending. He has lost a very good amount of bad weight this past offseason and it has been showing so far.

Weaknesses

Still a problem for Fowler, he does not have good leverage when he goes against an offensive lineman that has length and/or strength. It is not as bad of a problem as it was last season, but it is still something that shows up and needs attention.

Overall

Dante Fowler is a talented player as we speak. He has all the athletic build you want in a guy at his position. At times, He shows that you need more than one person blocking him if you want to get anything done.

Fowler is still considered raw on the pass-rushing side of things, but is a absolute MENACE against the run, does not budge when you try to run to his side. If he continues to develop the technical side of things like bending, hand usage, speed to power, and leverage, he can be something great at the next level.
