Most people expected the Buffalo Bills quarterback competition to last through the final preseason game. After all, we pretty much know how new head coach Rex Ryan has dealt with similar competitions in the past.
But just a couple days after naming Tyrod Taylor the starter, Buffalo's quarterback situation appears to be close to coming to a resolution.
According to Vic Carucci of The Buffalo News, EJ Manuel is expected to be the team's primary backup quarterback with Matt Cassel getting the boot when final roster cuts are made on Saturday:
Going with upside over experience at both the starting and primary backup positions could be a risky move for the Bills. It also makes a ton of sense considering the team is just a couple years removed from selecting Manuel in the first round.
Manuel, who many had pegged as a roster cut prior to the preseason, has completed 20-of-30 passes for 358 yards with four touchdowns and zero picks in three games this summer. It's not hard to understand why Buffalo decided to keep him.
This also means that Matt Simms will likely make the team as the No. 3 quarterback.
