The Atlanta Falcons were arguably one of the three most active teams in the first day of free agency, adding depth to both their offensive and defensive lines.
Atlanta signed former Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Paul Soliai, as well as offensive guard Jon Asamoah and defensive end Tyson Jackson, both formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs.
FOX’s Mike Garafolo is reporting that Soliai received a five-year, $33 million deal and that Asamoah’s contract is worth $4.5 million per season. Heading into free agency, the Falcons had over $26 million to spend in cap space.
Soliai will be reunited with his former defensive coordinator in Miami, Mike Nolan, who is now with the Falcons.
Soliai only had 4.5 career sacks, but at 6-foot-4 and 340 pounds, he is a great space-filler on the line. The signings, especially Soliai’s, points toward Atlanta moving to a 3-4 defense rather than a 4-3.
Scott Pioli, the former Chiefs general manager who is now in the front office of the Falcons, drafted Asamoah in the third round of the 2010 draft and Jackson as the third overall pick in the 2009 draft.
Asamoah was considered one of the top interior offensive linemen on the market this offseason, and Atlanta needed help along the line, after having the worst rushing offense in the NFL this season.
In four seasons with the Chiefs, Asamoah played in 60 games, and he is still only 25 years old.
Jackson’s signing also feeds into the idea of a switch to a 3-4 scheme. He is 6-foot-4 as well, and has nine career sacks in five seasons.
It’s also worth noting that the Falcons re-signed defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux. According to NFL.com’s Greg Rosenthal, Babineaux will receive $9 million over three years.
Atlanta now has the personnel to play a 4-3 in some situations, but Babineaux and Soliai will likely share time at the nose tackle position going forward.
