Fantasy Football: Deep Waiver Recommendations for Week 13

Here is eDraft's weekly look at the best possible waiver-wire adds in deep fantasy football leagues. They are different from Monday's rankings, as most of the players included here wouldn't be viable options in standard 12-team contests.

Instead, this is to help readers understand where the value is in deeper contests, especially when it comes to replacing injured players or adding talent deep into the bench.

Theo Riddick, Running Back, Detroit Lions

If you exist in PPR-heavy leagues, Riddick is right up there with Shaun Draughn as the best running back to pick up on the waiver wire. This former Notre Dame standout is averaging five receptions per game this season and has put up 134 receiving yards over the past two games.

The issue with relying on Riddick is that he's attempted just 28 runs in 11 games, including 16 in the four games since he's taken on a larger role in Detroit's offense.

Ameer Abdullah, Running Back, Detroit Lions

Remember when Abdullah was a sexy fantasy option early in the year? It seems that this was such a long time ago. After myriad of fumble problems and some injuries, Abdullah is finally back and playing an important role in Detroit's offense.

While he's been taken out in obvious passing situations in favor of Riddick, Abdullah has put up 28 attempts for 107 yards over the past two games, proving himself to be the Lions' primary ball-carrier during that span.

The issue with both Abdullah and Riddick is that one provides tremendous value in PPR and not much in standard leagues. Meanwhile, the other is a standard league option, while not really acting as much of a threat in PPR-heavy formats.

Dontrelle Inman, Wide Receiver, San Diego Chargers

We recommended Inman in a similar article a few weeks back. He responded by putting up just one catch against the Baltimore Ravens. Now that there is more of a sample size here, the confidence we have in adding Inman has taken off.

This second-year receiver is coming off a five-catch, 65-yard performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars. That represented the third consecutive game that Inman has seen five-plus targets. With ongoing injuries to Keenan Allen and Malcom Floyd, Inman will continue to see targets in the Chargers' pass-happy offense.

J.J. Nelson, Wide Receiver, Arizona Cardinals

This speedy rookie from UAB put up four receptions for 142 yards and a touchdown against the Cincinnati Bengals two weeks ago. He followed that up with 53 yards on two receptions in Arizona's win over San Francisco on Sunday.

The only real issue here for Nelson is a lack of snaps. Despite tellying 195 yards over the past two games, Nelson played just 43 total snaps during that span. With John Brown and Michael Floyd looking healthy, there just might not be enough snaps to go around here.

However, if you are in a pickle, it might make sense to add Nelson in deeper leagues as a backup option in case something goes wrong with another player.

Cecil Shorts, Wide Receiver, Houston Texans

From throwing a touchdown two weeks ago against the New York Jets to a touchdown catch this past weekend, the Texans are doing everything possible to get Shorts involved here. That's magnified by the average of nearly 60 snaps he's playing per game on the year.

With only eight receptions in the three game since returning from injury, Shorts will fly under the radar. However, it's important to note that he put up 26 receptions in the five games prior to the injury. If healthy, Shorts will be a major part of the Texans' passing game.

Tavon Austin, Wide Receiver, St. Louis Rams

Austin has put up a career-high 647 yards from scrimmage in 11 games this season. He's coming off a 96 total yards performance against the Cincinnati Bengals. That's the fourth time he's tallied 80-plus yards on the year.

With teams continuing to focus on Todd Gurley in the backfield, Austin will be given an opportunity to receive touches on an otherwise talent-stricken offense in St. Louis. He's a decent bottom rung bench option that could help you hit lightning in a bottle. That's only magnified by the seven touchdowns he has scored.

Scott Chandler, Tight End, New England Patriots

With Rob Gronkowski out for at least a couple weeks, we already know that Chandler will find himself highly targeted in the Tom Brady-led Patriots offense. Last week alone against the Denver Broncos, the veteran tight end put up five receptions for 58 yards and a score on 11 targets, all season-high numbers.

Even when Gronkowski returns, it wouldn't be too surprising to see the Patriots use two tight end sets. Remember, that's what helped the team a ton when Aaron Hernandez wasn't locked up for murder. As it is, Chandler still saw a ton of snaps before Gronk went down late in the fourth quarter on Sunday. He's going to be a factor.

Vance McDonald, Tight End, San Francisco 49ers

With 10 receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns over the past two weeks, McDonald finds himself as the second-best fantasy tight end during that span. In fact, the former second-round pick has finished in the top five of the rankings each of the past two weeks.

With Blaine Gabbert looking to rely on tight ends as he gets comfortable in the 49ers offense, McDonald becomes a solid under-the-radar waiver wire option.
