Fantasy Football Delight: Alex Smith and Jamaal Charles Go Off

Anyone who decided to stick with the Oakalnd Raiders defense and special teams for the duration of the season should forever be banned from signing up for fantasy football from this point on. Less than 50 days after giving up seven touchdowns and 45.64 points to Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, Da Raidaaas were back at it on Sunday.

They yielded five total touchdowns to both Jamaal Charles and Alex Smith in the Kansas City Chiefs 56-31 blowout win. For Charles, this game goes down as one of the single greatest fantasy performances in the history of the fake game. Charles' performance on Sunday represented a tie for the fourth-best single-game fantasy output for a running back since 2000. He is only surpassed by the following games...

Date Player Opp Rush Yds Rec Yds TD PTS
Week 14, 2003 Clinton Portis Chiefs 218 36 5 54
Week 5, 2002 Shaun Alexander Vikings 139 92 5 52
Week 8, 2012 Doug Martin Raiders 251 21 4 51
Week 15, 2013 Jamaal Charles Raiders 20 195 5 51

Notice something here? Each of those last two performances have come against the Raiders over the course of the last 15 months or so. Charles, who put up just 20 yards and a score on eight attempts, tore through Oakland's defense in the passing game. He caught eight passes for 195 yards and four touchdowns on eight targets. That's perfection right there. Those four scores represent a tie for the all-time record for a running back in NFL history.

Meanwhile, Smith put up a career day of his own. The enigmatic veteran, in his first season with Kansas City, tallied a career-high five touchdown. His previous single-game high was three touchdown passes (eight different times, including earlier this season). Smith's 17/20, 287-yard, five-touchdown performance was good enough to rank him No. 2 among all quarterbacks this week, right behind the aforementioned Nick Foles.

In addition, one quarter of Smith's passing attempts went for a touchdown. Just think about that for a second, guys. Smith put up a perfect 158.3 rating, which represented just the 25th time in NFL history that a quarterback has accomplished such a feat in a single game. Interestingly enough, Smith was one completion away from doing the same last season in his final full game as a member of the San Francisco 49ers against the Arizona Cardinals.

By virtue of this virtuosa performance (see what I did there?) Smith is now the No. 8 overall fantasy quarterback through 15 weeks, just a single point behind Russell Wilson at No. 7. The veteran has now put up top-five fantasy numbers in four of his last five games.

Overall, the Chiefs season seems to be going in reverse, at least on the offensive side of the ball. After averaging just 22.2 points per game in their first 10 outings, the Chiefs are putting up an average of 39.3 points per game in their last four outings. One of the primary reasons for this is the connection that Smith has found with Charles in the passing game. The running back has now put up 65 receptions for 655 yards and seven touchdowns this season. He's also on pace for 2,100 total yards.

For his part, Smith is having a career season.

No. 11 is on pace to shatter all of his previous single-season highs, including total yards (4,050), passing yards (3,611), rushing yards (439) and total touchdowns (28).

While most fantasy leagues come to a climax this week, you might want to think long and hard about riding Smith and Charles either in extended standard leagues or weekly leagues. Kansas City will be taking on pedestrian defenses in the form of the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers in its final two regular season games.

As it is, these are ridiculous numbers we were able to uncover after Smith and Charles put up some of the most eye-opening fantasy numbers of the season. Any time your starting backfield can combine for nearly 83 fantasy points, you had a pretty amazing day.
