Fantasy Football: Finding a Replacement for Robert Griffin III

As Jay Glazer over at Fox Sports reported Saturday night, Robert Griffin III will not start today against the Cleveland Browns after suffering knee injury last week against the Baltimore Ravens.

Fellow rookie Kirk Cousins will be under center for Washington as it attempts to keep its playoff hopes alive. The Michigan State product led Washington back against Baltimore last week with a last second touchdown pass followed by a two-point conversion to tie the game. The Redskins ended up taking the game in overtime.

That being said, Cousins is nowhere near a solid fantasy start; especially during the playoffs.

You are probably not in a good situation at this point if RGIII is your QB1. While Tony Romo, Joe Flacco and Eli Manning  represent solid QB2 options here, I highly doubt any of you have them on your roster if you selected RGIII in August or September.

Instead, you are going to have to take a gander at the waiver wire in the lead-up to kickoffs later today.

Let me give you a few solid options.

Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers

Kaepernick continues to make a name for himself around the world of fantasy football. He is, however, owned in just 52 percent of ESPN leagues. That is really amazing considering the fantasy production he has put up. The second-year star from Nevada is No. 7 among quarterbacks in fantasy points over the course of the last four weeks; his initial four NFL starts. According to ESPN's Mike Sando, Kaepernick has the highest QBR for any quarterback in his first four starts since "at least" the 2009 season. Yes, that includes Cam Newton, Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck

He goes up against a 30th ranked New England Patriots pass defense on Sunday Night Football. While it will be a hostile environment, Kaepernick represents your best option if you have to go out of the house to find a QB1 option with RGIII not playing.

Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks

Yet another up-and-comer, Wilson is owned in just one quarter of ESPN leagues. While he is the 17th ranked fantasy quarterback through 14 weeks, this Wisconsin product has picked it up big time recently. He is averaging 18 fantasy points over the last five games and is going up against a poor Buffalo Bills pass defense.

If you are unable to get Kaepernick, this rookie quarterback is not a bad alternative. He should be able to accumulate nearly 20 fantasy points. That might not be enough to match what RGIII could have given you, but it will enable you to compete as the fantasy playoffs draw on.

Brandon Weeden, Cleveland Browns

This rookie from Oklahoma State is nowhere near being a solidly consistent QB1 option, mostly due to the Browns lack of receiving threats. However, he should be able to come in and give you something in lieu of RGIII. Weeden is the 22nd ranked fantasy quarterback and is owned in less than nine percent of ESPN leagues. He has tallied double digit fantasy points eight times this season.
