Fantasy Football Profile: Keenan Allen

Keenan Allen was widely considered the No. 1 overall wide receiver in the 2013 NFL draft during the early stages of the scouting process. He soon learned what most of us in the industry already knew. It means little where a prospect is slotted early in the process, it matters more where he ends up.

As it turned out, Allen was the eighth receiver off the board and went to the San Diego Chargers with the 14th pick in the third round. It was a disappointing fall for the once highly regarded CAL product.

This doesn't mean that Allen lacks the necessary tools to be a good receiver in the NFL. He struggled with injuries following the 2012 season and was caught up in a drug-test controversy at the scouting combine in Indianapolis. There are some league executive who still believe Allen will be the most productive receiver in the '13 draft class.

Let's take a look at what he provides from a fantasy aspect:

College Stats
Year Rec Yards Avg TD
2010 46 490 10.7 5
2011 98 1,343 13.7 6
2012 61 737 12.1 6

The San Diego Chargers wide receiver group goes about six deep. Vincent Brown returns after missing 2012 with an injury. The former third-round pick from San Diego State recorded 19 receptions for 329 yards and two scores in a strong rookie campaign back in 2011. He should come back and pick up where he left off as a rookie.

Danario Alexander was a mid-season pick up and did extremely well for fantasy owners who made the decision to acquire him through the waiver wire. The veteran tallied nearly 700 receiving yards and seven scores in seven starts. He also caught nearly 70 percent of the passes thrown in his direction.

The only other consistent Chargers' receiver returning to the club from 2012 is Malcom Floyd, who was widely expected to take over for Vincent Jackson as Philip Rivers' primary target. While Floyd did catch 13 more passes than the previous season, his yardage total went down and touchdown numbers stayed the same. In reality, Floyd is nowhere near a true No. 1 wide receiver in the NFL.

2012 free-agent signings Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal combined for just 37 receptions and three touchdowns. In addition, they caught less than half the combined passes thrown in their direction.

Needless to say, there is room for Allen to make an impact for San Diego as a rookie in 2013.

He has the size, build, hands and route-running ability to be an immediate starter for Rivers and Co. Expect Allen to surprise a great deal of people with his ability to make difficult third-down catches and provide San Diego's struggling veteran with a consistent target to throw to on the outside. Allen reminds me a great deal of Anquan Boldin, who won Offensive Rookie of the Year honors with Arizona back in 2003 with nearly 1,400 receiving yards.

In terms of dynasty leagues, Allen should be one of the first rookies you look to take outside of those selected in the initial round. He is right up there with Quinton Patton and Aaron Dobson as solid mid-round dynasty rookies.

Projected 2013 Statistics: 45 receptions, 570 yards and four touchdowns
