Fantasy Football: Ranking Second-Year Tight Ends

Rookie tight ends in 2013 didn't make anywhere near the same type of impact as rookie running backs and wide receivers. Only only one (Tyler Eifert) was selected in the first round, and he shared tight end duties with Jermaine Gresham in Cincinnati.

In reality, only Tim Wright acted as a true No.1 tight end throughout the entire 2013 campaign. This means that there are a ton of question marks heading into the 2014 campaign. Let's take a look at the top-10 second-year fantasy tight ends around the NFL.

1. Jordan Reed, Washington Redskins

2013 Statistics: 45 receptions, 499 yards and three touchdowns

Reed will enter his second season as Washington's unquestioned No. 1 tight end. Barring continued regression from Robert Griffin III, this means that Reed should improve on what was a great rookie campaign. He caught a ridiculous 76 percent of passes thrown in his direction, dropping just four passes in the process.

In terms of consistency, Reed was our No. 3 tight end in that category. He tallied at least 50 receiving yards or a touchdown in seven of the nine games he played in. These are all indicators that Reed could be a surprise TE1 option when all is said and done. Considering that Reed's current ADP is No. 9 among tight ends, he's equal value. Pick him up and don't worry about the tight end position again until much later in the draft.

2. Tyler Eifert, Cincinnati Bengals

2013 Statistics: 39 receptions, 445 yards and two touchdowns

Eifert should have a breakout campaign considering that the Bengals have to know Jermaine Gresham is nowhere near the same level as it relates to being a pass-catching tight end. One of the biggest fantasy football travesties last season was that Eifert received less than four targets per game. He was still able to put up decent numbers as a bench option.

Advanced statistics show that Eifert, given a chance, will be a solid top-12 tight end when all is said and done in 2014. He dropped five of 60 targets, came down with 65 percent of the passes thrown in his direction and averaged about eight yards per reception. Give him 100 targets and his production will increase a great deal. I am expecting a big season from the former first-round pick.

3. Zach Ertz, Philadelphia Eagles

2013 Statistics: 36 receptions, 469 yards and four touchdowns

Once Ertz starts to receive a majority of the Eagles tight end targets, he's going to blow up. The 2013 second-round pick was targeted just 3.5 times per game last season, while Brent Celek received 3.2 targets per outing. There is no reason why that split should remain the same in 2014.

Ertz caught 65 percent of the passes thrown in his direction and dropped just two targets. Nick Foles also boasted a near-perfect quarterback rating when targeting Ertz last year. The Stanford product is currently 11th in ADP among tight ends, and that's about where he should be expected to finish in 2014.

4. Tim Wright, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2013 Statistics: 54 receptions, 571 yards and five touchdowns

Wright's fantasy impact in 2014 will depend a great deal on whether Austin Seferian-Jenkins is realy to make an impact as a rookie. Tampa Bay exhausted a second-round pick on him and wil rely on the Washington product to make an immediate impact. If so, Wright becomes nothing more than a back end fantasy option.

He was our 17th-most consistent fantasy tight end, putting up either 50 yards or a score in seven of his 16 games. If Wright is given an equal chance to start and accumulate the necessary targets in 2014, he will make an impact. Just too many unknowns here.
