Fantasy Football Review: #95, Greg Olsen

Greg Olsen, Tight End, Carolina Panthers

Olsen has been an enigmatic fantasy performer for most of his career, first with the Chicago Bears and now with Carolina. Prior to 2012, the veteran tight end had never compiled more than 60 receptions and 612 yards in a single season.  He did, however, tally 23 touchdowns between 2008 and 2011.

This seemed to indicate that Olsen wasn't a solid option in PPR leagues, but could provide you a decent amount of production as a FLEX-type player.

That all changed in 2012.

Olsen put up career high's in both receptions (69) and yards (843), while tallying five touchdowns. He ended the season ranked No. 8 overall among tight ends in a down season at that position.

Consistency didn't seem to be the issue for Olsen in his sixth NFL season. He gained at least 40 receiving yards 12 times. With that in mind, the Miami (F) product only put up one 100-yard receiving game. In reality, Olsen never elevated his game to above-average fantasy tight end status.

This has to be surprising considering that Cam Newton looked to Olsen to make plays when the outside passing game wasn't working. After all. Olsen racked up the fifth-most targets among tight ends in 2012, but was only barely balse to scratch the top 10 in terms of production.

Next Up: Vick Ballard, Running Back Indianapolis Colts
