Fantasy Football Review: #99, Malcom Floyd

Yesterday we focused on the No. 100 overall fantasy performer in terms of points from the 2012 season, DeMarco Murray of the Dallas Cowboys. In what will be a continuing segment over here at eDraft, we will count down to the No. 1 overall fantasy player in the coming months.

Up next:

No. 99, Malcom Floyd, Wide Receiver, San Diego Chargers

Floyd was destined to have a breakout campaign for San Diego after it lost Vincent Jackson to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency. It didn't necessarily work out.

There were a few different issues that caused the veteran receiver to actually regress a bit from 2011. First, the Chargers struggled a great deal in protecting Philip Rivers in the passing game. This caused Rivers to have issues getting the ball to the outside on a consistent basis. He struggled with timing and wasn't able to find a great connection with Floyd.

Secondly, he missed the final two games of the season with a high-ankle sprain and was hampered by various injuries all year long. Needless to say, Floyd didn't live up to expectations in 2012.

He did put up two 100-yard games in a four week span earlier in the season, which led many to believe that he was ready to take off in terms of fantasy production. Floyd also tallied at least 40 receiving yards in 11 of his 14 outings during the regular year. It was, however, his inability to expand his yardage total that caused him to be somewhat of an enigmatic fantasy performer.

Looking basically at the logistics of San Diego's situation on offense following the departure of Jackson, I had come to the conclusion that Floyd would be a decent FLEX option in one of my fantasy leagues. I continued to roll with Floyd as the season progressed, hoping against hope that he would pick his game up. At season's end, he was on my bench.

Moving forward, I wouldn't expect a whole heck of a lot from him in 2013. If he was going to break out and be a solid fantasy performer it would have happened in 2011.

Next Up: Brian Hartline, Wide Receiver, Miami Dolphins (No. 98).
