Former Kansas State Wide Receiver Chris Harper is a big, physical receiver with a great combination of speed and size, as well as very strong and dependable hands. Harper was held back quite a bit with the Wildcats, due mainly to their lack of offensive talent. Despite his lackluster numbers, The Seattle Seahawks loved what they saw in Harper, especially after a strong showing at the scouting combine, and selected him at the end of the fourth round in April’s draft. Everyone knows that Pete Carroll loves physical and big players, but what sort of fantasy impact will Harper have in 2013 and beyond, let’s find out.
College Stats | Year | Rec | Yards | Avg | TD's |
| 2010 | 25 | 330 | 13.2 | 4 |
| 2011 | 40 | 547 | 13.7 | 5 |
| 2012 | 57 | 848 | 14.9 | 3 |
| Totals: | 122 | 1,725 | 14.1 | 12 |
As you can see, Harper’s college numbers leave quite a bit to be desired. But when you see him on tape, it’s easy to see what Carroll likes about him. He’s a possession receiver that uses his hands to bring in the ball from everywhere, and he never has a problem with corners trying to jam him at the line. Partnered with the speedy Percy Harvin, Harper could be the outside guy that the Seahawks hoped Sidney Rice and Golden Tate would be.
That said, barring any injuries, it’s going to be hard for Harper to find significant field time and targets in 2013. It’s going to take him awhile to adjust to the speed of the NFL, as well as learn the Seahawks complex offensive scheme. Harper will mostly see the field as a fatigue or late-game substitute, or in running situations due to his above average run-blocking ability.
For 2013, there’s no reason to take Harper in any redraft leagues, regardless of the format. He will finish the season in the top 100 for receivers, barely; which doesn't even make him a WR5 option. Harper has his value at the far end of a dynasty startup or rookie draft, as he will likely replace Tate or Rice in the coming years as he works his way up the depth chart. There’s probably a nice place for him on your taxi squad for the next year or two.
2013 Stat Projections: 30 receptions, 380 yards and one touchdown.
