Tyler Wilson is a talented pocket passer, with great leadership qualities and prototypical size for a quarterback. An abrupt coaching change right before his senior season caused Wilson to fall back into some bad habits that he had worked very hard to correct. Despite the mechanical work needed, the Oakland Raiders couldn’t pass on Wilson in the fourth round of April’s draft. Despite problems with his mechanics, Wilson has impressed the coaching staff in Oakland throughout the rookie minicamps and OTA’s. If Matt Flynn continues to struggle through training camp and into the preseason and Wilson continues to show improvement, he’s going to start the season as the Raiders’ starting quarterback.
That said, Wilson isn’t going to put up sufficient numbers to warrant any fantasy consideration in redraft leagues. The Raiders’ new offensive scheme is based on the power run, so as long as Darren McFadden and even Marcel Reece are on the field, Wilson won’t get a lot of chances to air it out. He’ll be confined to short, quick passes to keep the defense honest and compliment the running game. In dynasty leagues, Wilson is definitely worth picking up in the later rounds and stashing on the taxi squad for a couple of years. As he matures and works out the kinks, he will gain an expanded role in the Oakland’s offense, which will cause his fantasy value to go up in the coming years.
