The NFL never stops amazing fans with incredible performances coming each week that just make your jaw drop and fantasy football owners either cringe or rejoice. Week 6 was another lesson that you don't always have to spend up on the best quarterback in daily fantasy football or take a quarterback within the first five rounds in season-long leagues.
Week 6 showed some major bounce back performances, some major surprises and of course some stars. Let's take a look at the top-10 scorers from Week 6.
1. Matthew Stafford, Quarterback, Detroit Lions
Statistics: 27/42, 405 passing yards, 37 rushing yards and four passing touchdowns
Points: 33.9
What a turnaround it was for Stafford. Just last week he was benched mid-game after throwing three interceptions. Now he is the top scorer in Week 6, showing just how crazy fantasy football can be at times and why you should target quarterbacks against the Chicago Bears defense.
The old Stafford-Calvin Johnson connection was back, opening up the deep passing game and allowing Stafford to have more freedom in the offense. Stafford took advantage of the matchup and we saw the player who we were more accustomed to seeing it past years. There will be some bad weeks mixed in, but Stafford can offer some upside if the coaching staff gives him this freedom.
2. Philip Rivers, Quarterback, San Diego Chargers
Statistics: 43/65, 503 passing yards and two passing touchdowns
Points: 28.12
Once San Diego discovered that Green Bay couldn't stop their passing attack, it was non stop quick throws and slants. Rivers set franchise records in completions (43) and pass attempts (65). He relied heavily on Keenan Allen, who would have finished in the top-10 if not for a hip pointer suffered during the game. The injury caused Rivers to turn their focus to Antonio Gates, who came through in a big way. If Allen can return soon, Rivers upcoming games against the Oakland Raiders, Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears, Kansas City Chiefs (twice) and Jacksonville Jaguars can make him a top-seven fantasy quarterback.
3. Andrew Luck, Quarterback, Indianapolis Colts
Statistics: 30/50, 312 passing yards, 35 rushing yards and three passing touchdowns
Points: 27.98
Luck was a risky play for fantasy owners given his "questionable" status to play and concern he may not yet be over his shoulder injury. Sunday night's game showed that Luck is indeed not over the shoulder ailment, missing throws deep and just lacking some touch on his throws. But the Colts asked him to carry the team against the New England Patriots and he came through. More time should give Luck's shoulder additional time to heal and with Donte Moncrief and T.Y. Hilton on his side, Luck should put up top-five quarterback numbers for most of the season.
4. Devonta Freeman, Running Back, Atlanta Falcons
Statistics: 13 carries, 100 rushing yards, eight receptions, 57 receiving yards and two touchdowns
Points: 27.6
At this point it isn't a fluke, Freeman is very real and will remain a top-three fantasy running back until he gives us a reason not to see him there. After a stretch of destroying strong run defenses, Freeman took his show on the road to New Orleans and had his way with its defense. A 157 total yard, two-touchdown performance is an outstanding game, expect this streak of dominance to continue with upcoming games against the Tennessee Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and San Francisco 49ers.
5. DeAndre Hopkins, Wide Receiver, Houston Texans
Statistics: 10 receptions, 148 receiving yards and two touchdowns
Points: 26.8
It's simply sensational what Hopkins is doing right now given the circumstances. Brian Hoyer, someone who really shouldn't be a starting quarterback, is throwing him the football and Hopkins is putting up video game numbers. Opposing teams know the ball is going his way, but they can't stop him. Hopkins is already at 89 targets through six games, it's just a wonder what he could do if he had an above-average quarterback throwing him the ball.
6. Martavis Bryant, Wide Receiver, Pittsburgh Steelers
Statistics: Six receptions, 137 receiving yards and two touchdowns
Points: 26.5
Bryant's long-awaited 2015 debut was pushed back last week after suffering an injury in practice, but he had no limitations on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. While Bryant only had five receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, his 88-yard touchdown showed why he can be a fantasy darling. On a short slant, Bryant made a defender miss, then cut to the outside and outraced every Cardinals' defensive back to the end zone. When Ben Roethlisberger returns, Bryant can be a WR2 in fantasy the rest of the season.
7. Chris Ivory, Running Back, New York Jets
Statistics: 20 carries, 146 rushing yards, three receptions, 50 receiving yards and one rushing touchdown
Points: 25.6
Ivory has established himself as one of the most reliable running backs in football this year. New York is giving him the carries he needs to get momentum going and with a powerful offensive line paired with a passing game defenses have to respect, Ivory is in position to succeed. The matchup really doesn't matter anymore, Ivory belongs in lineups every week.
8. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Quarterback, New York Jets
Statistics: 19/26, 253 passing yards, 31 rushing yards, three touchdowns (one rushing), one interception
Points: 25.22
Maybe we should seriously consider just calling him "FitzMagic", because this has been quite an impressive start to the season for Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick's consistency has helped show Brandon Marshall still has plenty left in the tank and remains an excellent wide receiver, while Eric Decker is the perfect number-two receiver for this team. While the rushing totals will likely go down, he could put up some 300-yard games.
9. Brian Hoyer, Quarterback, Houston Texans
Statistics: 24/36, 293 passing yards and three passing touchdowns
Points: 24.22
Hoyer is in the top-10 scorers for Week 6, this is all the evidence you will ever need that football is an unpredictable sport on most occasions. Credit to Hoyer though, he has successfully got the football to Hopkins and just let his receiver make plays. All Hoyer needs is to put the football near Hopkins area and odds are he will catch it, if Hopkins is facing double coverage, he can dump it off to Arian Foster. We will almost certaily never see Hoyer in the top-10 again, but at least he put up big numbers this week.
10. James Starks, Running Back, Green Bay Packers
Statistics: 10 carries, 112 rushing yards, one reception, five receiving yards and two total touchdowns
Points: 23.7
We might be on the verge of a timeshare in Green Bay with Starks and Eddie Lacy sharing carries, with the "hot hand" seeing more of the work. This season, Lacy has been the more explosive back, averaging 4.5 yards per carry on 63 carries for 286 rushing yards to Lacy's 3.9 yards per carry on 67 carries for 260 yards. Against a Chargers' defense that is the worst in the NFL versus the run, Starks made two big plays and saw a majority of the work.
He will be a hot pickup in fantasy leagues, especially with Lacy's struggles, just remember Lacy has typically been a slow starter and battled an ankle injury. The bye week should give Lacy time to rest that ankle, return to having more power and explosiveness, regaining his heavy share on the carries. If Lacy is still slow and just doesn't look like an effective back, Starks could become a top-20 fantasy back over the rest of the season.
