Fantasy Football Slant: 10 Best Performances of Week 8

We are approaching the halfway point of the season and each week in fantasy we are always exposed to something different. Some weeks it might be stellar performances by running backs or wide receivers putting up 200-yard games. In Week 8 we saw two unbelievable performances from quarterbacks.

Drew Brees and Eli Manning stole the show with 13 combined touchdowns, far and away the two best performers of Week 8. But it wasn't just Eli and Brees, the top-10 scorers from Week 8 were dominated by quarterbacks. Now let's take a look at the top-10 performers from Week 8.

1. Drew Brees, Quarterback, New Orleans Saints

Stats: 40/50, 511 passing yards, seven touchdowns and one interception

Points: 46.54

Just a few weeks ago some believed Brees was done, the downturn of his career had arrived and this was going to be a rough season in New Orleans. But on Sunday we saw Brees put on a sensational performance, completing 80 percent of his passes and delivering strikes all over the field.

Brees tied an NFL record for most passing touchdowns in a game (seven) and his lone mistake came on an interception that was ripped out of his receiver's hands and returned for a touchdown. New York's secondary was ripped to shreds and flaws in coverage were exposed. Next week New Orleans will face a Titans' secondary that has allowed the third-fewest passing yards this season.

2. Eli Manning, Quarterback, New York Giants

Stats: 30/41, 350 passing yards and six touchdowns

Points: 38

It was a shootout in New Orleans as Manning almost matched Brees for touchdowns. While Manning didn't finish with nearly as many yards as Brees, but he still delivered a fantasy performance that was likely matchup-changing across the fantasy landscape.

Manning relied heavily on Odell Beckham, hooking up with his top receiver eight times for 130 receiving yards and three touchdowns. You couldn't have drawn this day up more perfectly for Manning as a quarterback, delivering for fantasy owners and putting together a performance that should have easily won the game. Next week he gets a cozy matchup against a Tampa Bay Buccaneers secondary that has allowed the third-most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks.

3. Odell Beckham, Wide Receiver, New York Giants

Stats: Eight receptions, 130 receiving yards and three touchdowns

Points: 31

When Manning has even a good game, that usually means Beckham will be right there with him putting up the points. In the case of a six-touchdown game, Beckham is putting up unbelievable numbers and is the big factor why Manning had a monster game.

Beckham roasted the Saints' secondary for three touchdowns, two short and a 50-yarder where he was open in the end zone. Beckham was off to a bit of a slow start to start the season and battled a hamstring strain, but he looked healthy on Sunday and now faces a Buccaneers' secondary next week who gives up points in bunches.

4. Tom Brady

Stats: 26/38, 356 passing yards and four touchdowns

Points: 30.34

Brady's revenge tour is underway and his latest victim was the Miami Dolphins defense on Thursday Night Football. It looked easy for Brady as he spread the ball around and fit balls into tight windows to move the ball down the field. He is not only putting up the numbers of a fantasy MVP but he is performing at that level as well.

Things won't get tougher for him next week against Washington, a matchup that should make him QB1 for Week 8 and help him continue his streak of outstanding scoring performances.

5. Carson Palmer

Stats: 23/38, 374 passing yards, four touchdowns and one interception

Points: 29.56

Even without arguably his top receiver, John Brown, Palmer still put on a nice fantasy performance against the Cleveland Browns. While there were certainly some mistakes made with a few of his throws, he was largely consistent throughout the game.

Palmer fits perfectly into Bruce Arians offense with the vertical passing game and while Brown may have been out, Michael Floyd stepped up in his expanded role and thrived. Larry Fitzgerald's rejuvenation continues in this offense and their fantasy playoff schedule looks great.

6. Derek Carr

Stats: 23/36, 333 passing yards and four touchdowns

Points: 29.12

Social media has been full of debate and analysis over just how well Carr is really playing this season and if he is significantly benefiting from a favorable system that doesn't ask him to do too much. But even if that's the case, Oakland is making their quarterback comfortable and putting together an offense with talent around him to help him succeed.

As a result of this, Carr has thrived in his second season and has become one of the top fantasy quarterbacks out there. This was supposed to be a tough matchup against an outstanding New York Jets defense, Carr instead put up 333 yards and four touchdowns against them. A matchup next week against the Steelers' defense should lead to another top-10 quarterback performance from Car and a big game from Amari Cooper.

7. Philip Rivers

Stats: 28/37, 301 passing yards and three touchdowns

Points: 24.04

Many expected Rivers to put up big numbers against the Baltimore Ravens and he pretty much came through. Despite losing Ladarius Green and Keenan Allen during the game, Rivers still finished with three touchdowns and eclipsed 300 yards. He is also doing all of this with a cast of backups on the offensive line and a hobbled Antonio Gates.

Rivers is a high-volume quarterback this year who is going to rack up the passing attempts and even with more injured starters, he faces a Chicago Bears defense that has allowed the seventh-most fantasy points to quarterbacks this season. Rivers will be a premium quarterback play this week before heading into the bye in Week 10.

8. Joe Flacco

Stats: 25/37, 319 passing yards, one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown

Points: 22.96

Ahead of this matchup the big names talked about from a fantasy perspective were Rivers, Allen and Justin Forsett. No one really expected Flacco to put up a noteworthy performance and while he only threw a single passing touchdown, 319 passing yards and a rushing touchdown elevated him.

Going forward, it's very difficult to rely on Flacco as a consistent fantasy quarterback. He will now be without Steve Smith for the rest of the season and the Ravens already had a weak group of receivers, meanwhile predicting rushing touchdowns for a quarterback is nearly impossible. Once the bye weeks are over, Flacco should be a fringe fantasy option the rest of the season.

9. Tavon Austin, Wide Receiver, St. Louis Rams

Stats: Four receptions, 98 receiving yards, three carries, 21 rushing yards and two total touchdowns

Points: 21.9

Austin remains one of the most frustrating players in fantasy football this year. He is an offensive weapon who can make some big plays and be used in a variety of ways, but his first two years were spent with an offensive coordinator as creative as a stick figure drawing. Things have improved this year and he is putting up some big weeks but predicting the big plays on limited touches is just rolling the dice.

10. Malcom Floyd, Wide Receiver, San Diego Chargers

Stats: Four receptions, 92 receiving yards and two touchdowns

Points: 21.2

Floyd's big catches come at a time where his fantasy value is about to skyrocket. Keenan Allen is out indefinitely after having kidney surgery, Ladarius Green is out and Antonio Gates is playing through an injury. Floyd is now going to become much more heavily involved in an offense that will attempt 30-plus passes a game. Floyd is a great target on the waiver wire this week and a nice play next week against the Bears' secondary.
