Fantasy Football Surprises From Week 9

Week 9 was another hard one for fantasy owners. Between injuries and another six teams on bye this week, it was likely a struggle for most to assemble a working roster.  This time of a year, we’re in for surprises galore, and this week was no different.  Here’s four guys who were big fantasy surprises after all Sunday games were played.

Nick Foles - Quarterback, Philadelphia Eagles

Foles went against the Oakland Raiders this weekend, so it wasn’t wrong to assume he’d have a pretty good day.  But absolutely no one could have seen Foles tying the NFL record with seven passing touchdowns in a single game on 406 passing yards.  He finished Sunday as the top fantasy quarterback with a whopping 45.64 points.

Riley Cooper - Wide Receiver, Philadelphia Eagles

If Foles is the top quarterback for the day, it stands to reason that one of his receivers would also be on this list, but most owners would think that it would be DeSean Jackson, not Cooper with the big day.  Cooper caught three of Foles’ seven touchdowns for 139 yards and 33.70 fantasy points - good for the top spot.

Jerricho Cotchery - Wide Receiver, Pittsburgh Steelers

A Steelers’ wide out finally had a huge day, but it wasn’t Antonio Brown or Emmanuel Sanders.  No, it was the veteran, Cotchery, who finished as the second receiver with 27.60 fantasy points on 96 receiving yards and three touchdowns.  If you saw this one coming, you should probably take over for me here.

Mike James - Running Back, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

James had a breakout day as Doug Martin’s replacement, which no one saw coming against the Seattle Seahawks’ stifling defense.  James rushed for 158 yards and even threw a two yard touchdown pass en route to ranking seventh with 20.68 fantasy points.  Obviously the passing touchdown boosted his points, but even without it he still would’ve had 14-plus fantasy points on just the rushing yards.
