Fantasy Football Tip 3.0: Depth at Wide Receiver

Fantasy Football Tip 3.0: Depth at Wide Receiver

There is always an urgency to find one of the top five or six wide receivers when draft time rolls around. The idea of picking up a Calvin Johnson, Demaryius Thomas or Dez Bryant might just be too difficult to pass up early in said drafts.

While I wouldn't advocate going against the grain and passing up on them, there are some solid options that open up to you a bit later in the draft.

One thing that is common in the mocks that I have done is the idea to stream wide receivers later in hopes that you hit big time. It's the idea that your WR2, WR3 and/or FLEX might not be too far below your WR1 in terms of production, but combined provide much better production for your team.

Sure, you can pick up Bryant in the second round. You can also wait until the third to pick up your RB2 option. While not sure-fire, this other options may in fact represent better upside.

What about Vincent Jackson as your WR1 in the middle of the fourth round? You can easily go pick up a couple solid receiving threats a bit later.

T.Y. Hilton in the seventh round and DeSean Jackson in the eighth round come to mind as options.

This gives you three players who are primed to provide 1,000-plus yard seasons. It also enables you to line up the rest of your roster accordingly.

Bryant's ADP, as it currently stands according to My Fantasy League is near the top of the second round. You could go ahead and acquire two RB1 options in the initial two rounds, while waiting on a wide receiver until later.

How does this look?

1. C.J. Spiller, Running Back, Buffalo Bills

2. Alfred Morris, Running Back, Washington Redskins

3. Steven Jackson, Running Back, Atlanta Falcons

4. Vincent Jackson, Wide Receiver, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

5. Vernon Davis, Tight End, San Francisco 49ers

6. Russell Wilson, Quarterback, Seattle Seahawks

7. T.Y. Hilton, Wide Receiver, Indianapolis Colts

8. DeSean Jackson, Wide Receiver, Philadelphia Eagles

See how this example enables you to go for value with the rest of your picks? Of course, the idea of relying on ADP during a draft is ridiculous. Only novice fantasy football owners should utilize an average draft position as a primer for building a big board.

That being said, passing up on someone like Bryant early in a draft will enable you to acquire value throughout the draft.

Other mid-to-late round wide receiver options who could provide you starter-caliber numbers this season, include:

Mike Williams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Anquan Boldin, San Francisco 49ers

Lance Moore, New Orleans Saints

Denarius Moore, Oakland Raiders

Miles Austin, Dallas Cowboys

Alshon Jeffery, Chicago Bears

Each of these players could provide you with 1,000-plus yards and between six or seven touchdowns. Having them as your WR3 or FLEX option isn't too shabby down the road.
