The entire Kansas City Chiefs running back situation was thrown for a loop last month when starter Spencer Ware was lost for the season with a knee injury. While Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had previously indicated rookie third-round pick Kareem Hunt would be the featured back in Ware's stead, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy might have tipped the team's hand heading into Thursday's Week 1 matchup against the New England Patriots.
"These guys are all prepared. They’re all prepared to play. They all know they’re a big part of this game plan," Nagy said Monday. "That’s the exciting part. We have a team of guys that we’re not just loaded with one guy at one position. We have a group of guys that can all play well and we trust them at all positions.’’
Top backup Charcandrick West shined big time two seasons ago, putting up over 900 total yards and five touchdowns. Though, he took a major back seat to Ware and Co. this past season. Meanwhile, Kansas City also has veteran C.J. Spiller as the third option out of the backfield.
All this seems to indicate that Hunt might see his fantasy relevance diminished a bit early in the season before he ultimately takes on a lead-back role.
