1. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos (IND)
No surprises here. Manning will likely be in this spot all year, and he starts out against a favorable defense in Indiana. Even if Wes Welker is out for this game, Manning still has Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders and Julius Thomas, so no need to worry about the weapons. The Colts have a sub-par secondary, and Manning will likely just pick up where he left off last season.
Projected Statistics: 390 passing yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions
2. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints (ATL)
Brees gets an even more favorable matchup in Week 1 against a terrible Atlanta secondary. He just has so many weapons (not to mention adding Brandin Cooks) and Jimmy Graham will boost any quarterback’s numbers. New Orleans’ receivers can be tough to own in fantasy because of how much Brees likes to spread the ball around, but it’s great news for Brees owners. He’ll get everyone involved and is a lock to finish in the top three for fantasy quarterbacks this week.
Projected Statistics: 350 passing yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions
3. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions (NYG)
It can be tough to put too much faith into Stafford at times, but Week 1 seems to be as good of a time as any to get on board. The Lions face the Giants, who added Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie this offseason, but he’s coming off a down season, and the rest of their secondary had injury issues last season. Stafford also has two new weapons this season: Eric Ebron and Golden Tate. Tate is probably the best receiver Calvin Johnson has played with his entire career, which should inherently help Stafford all season.
Projected Statistics: 330 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception
4. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts (DEN)
This is probably higher than Luck will be on the average week, but he should produce above-average fantasy numbers against Denver. The Broncos have a revamped defense this season, but against the Broncos, you’re going to get in a shootout. In order to keep up with Manning, Luck will be airing it out to T.Y. Hilton, Reggie Wayne and Hakeem Nicks.
Projected Statistics: 300 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception
5. Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers (DAL)
This says more about Dallas’ defense than anything. On a weekly basis, most fantasy players against the Cowboys will be must-starts. I’m not putting too much stock in Kaepernick’s disappointing preseason, but he should be fine against Dallas’ porous defense. As always, Kaepernick will run and pass, really helping his fantasy value, and with all the passing weapons around him, this should be a great fantasy season for him.
Projected Statistics: 230 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, one interception 50 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown
6. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers (SE)
Rodgers was drafted as a top-three quarterback this season, but for Week 1, his value takes a hit for playing the Seahawks. Everyone knows at this point what Seattle is on defense, and even Rodgers will have a hard time overcoming that, but he’ll still do Rodgers-like things with Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb.
Projected Statistics: 300 passing yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions
7. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons (NO)
New Orleans’ has a solid passing defense, especially after adding Jairus Byrd, but people are sleeping on Ryan this season despite getting Roddy White and Julio Jones back. Ryan is at peak performance when he has White and Jones on the field, and at least for Week 1, they are both good to go. Losing Tony Gonzalez takes away Ryan’s safety net, but he and Harry Douglas put up some solid numbers last season, so Ryan will be good to go as a top 10 quarterback all season as long as his weapons are healthy.
Projected Statistics: 300 passing yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions
8. Nick Foles, Philadelphia Eagles (JAX)
I’m down on Foles for the season as a whole, but for Week 1, Chip Kelly will undoubtedly unleash a new game plan that he’s been working on this offseason. LeSean McCoy is totally healthy, and Foles showed last season he has a good connection with Riley Cooper. Foles’ performance in the preseason was slightly concerning, but in Kelly’s offense, he’ll produce.
Projected Statistics: 280 passing yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions
9. Tom Brady, New England Patriots (MIA)
It appears as if Rob Gronkowski is going to start this game, which is all you need to know about Brady’s fantasy value. If Gronk is in, Brady is going to put up numbers. He’s also getting Danny Amendola back healthy (at least for now) and Julian Edelman is a great option out of the slot. Miami has a good front seven, but its secondary is lacking, and Brady will be productive with Gronkowski on the field.
Projected Statistics: 260 passing yards, two touchdowns, no intercpetions
10. Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears (BUF)
Will Cutler turn the ball over? Probably. Will he throw at least two touchdowns? Definitely. With Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall, how could anyone not like Cutler this season? Chicago’s offense has the potential to be ranked in the top five in total yardage by the time the season ends, and Buffalo’s secondary is not what it used to be now that Byrd is gone.
Projected Statistics: 290 passing yards, two touchdowns, one interception
