Shane Vereen Running Back, New England Patriots (vs Buffalo Bills)
Statistics: 14 rushes, 101 yards, seven receptions, 58 yards and zero touchdowns
Leave it to New England's backup running back to be the No. 1 overall fantasy performer in this one. With Stevan Ridley riding the pine due to a fumble, the Patriots turned to fellow third-year running back Shane Vereen, who responded by putting up 159 total yards. Despite not scoring a touchdown, Vereen finished as the fifth-best fantasy running back on Sunday. He was an even better option in PPR leagues.
A.J. Green, Wide Receiver, Cincinnati Bengals (at Chicago Bears)
Statistics: Nine receptions, 162 yards and two touchdowns
Despite what ended up being a bad loss for Cincinnati, third-year wide receiver A.J. Green continued to show the football world why he is quickly becoming one of the best at his position in the NFL. His nine-recepton, two-touchdown performance ranked him right behind Victor Cruz among fantasy wide receivers on Sunday. Both touchdowns were scored in the first half, a two-yard pass from Andy Dalton in the first and a 45-yard strike early in the second.
Jordan Cameron, Tight End, Cleveland Browns (vs Miami Dolphins)
Statistics: Nine receptions, 108 yards and one touchdowns
I am one of the few who didn't buy into the preseason fantasy hype for Jordan Cameron, but he proved me wrong on Sunday against a pretty good Miami defense. Cameron led all Browns' receivers in receptions and yards, tallying the fourth-most fantasy points among tight ends on Sunday.
Reggie Bush, Running Back, Detroit Lions (vs Minnesota Vikings)
Statistics: 21 rushes, 90 yards, four receptions, 101 yards and one touchdown
eDraft's associate editor and co-host of eDraft Sports Radio, Nick Slegel, has been conducting the Reggie Bush train for some time now. Again, I didn't fall into the category of those who believed he'd be a top-tier fantasy running back this year. While the sample size is small, Bush impressed a great deal on Sunday. He put up nearly 200 total yards and one score, ranking second to only Adrian Peterson in fantasy points among running backs on Sunday. What's even more crazy, fellow Lions' running back Joique Bell ranked third in that category.
Terrelle Pryor, Quarterback, Oakland Raiders (at Indianapolis Colts)
Statistics: 19/29, 217 yards, 13 rushes, 112 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions
Making just his second-career NFL start, Pryor nearly led the Raiders to an upset win over Andrew Luck and the Colts on Sunday. Those hopes came to an end when the young quarterback threw a late-game interception, but that doesn't take away from Pryor's performance. He actually finished Sunday's game as the top rusher in the entire league and as the eight-ranked fantasy quarterback for the day.
Drew Brees, Quarterback, New Orleans Saints (vs Atlanta Falcons)
Statistics: 26/35, 357 yards, two touchdowns and one interception
Just an average day at the office for Drew Brees, who helped Sean Payton win in his return to the Saints' sideline. Brees racked up 357 yards and two scores, including a 25-yard second quarter strike to Marques Colston. Brees ended Sunday as the fifth-ranked fantasy quarterback for the day, which places him right about where we project him for the season.
Geno Smith, Quarterback, New York Jets (vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers)
Statistics: 24/38, 256 yards, six rushes, 47 yards, one touchdown and one interception
What a gutsy win by Geno Smith and the Jets on Sunday. While they were helped by a dumb late-game Tampa Bay penalty, Rex Ryan's squad surprised the hell out of us skeptics. Among the most surprising performances at The Meadowlands, Smith tallied over 300 yards of total offense, including a seven-yard pass to Kellen Winslow in the second quarter. He finished as a decent QB2 option, but showed promise for the remainder of the season.
Chris Johnson, Running Back, Tennessee Titans (at Pittsburgh Steelers)
Statistics: 25 rushes, 70 yards and zero touchdowns
Not much to see here. This was a stinker of a game by every possible definition of the word. In fact, these two teams combined for just a dozen more yards than Colin Kaepernick (more on that later). On that note, we have to go with the guy who actually did something. Chris Johnson finished Sunday as the 22nd-ranked fantasy running back. Not much to write home about, but something.
Russell Wilson, Quarterback, Seattle Seahawks (at Carolina Panthers)
Statistics: 25/33, 320 yards, five rushes, seven yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions
After a slow one-of-five start, Wilson completed 24 of his final 28 passes and put up the first 300-yard passing game of his career. His 43-yard game-winning strike to Jermaine Kearse is what puts Wilson on this list. Other than that, it was a decent performance. He finished as the 17th-ranked fantasy quarterback.
Alex Smith, Quarterback, Kansas City Chiefs (at Jacksonville Jaguars)
Statistics: 21/34, 173 yards, four rushes, 25 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions
Not a great stat line, but Alex Smith got the job done against a lackluster Jaguars' defense. With two first half touchdown passes, Smith made his presence known in his first start for Andy Reid and Co. Depending on what happens tonight, it could be enough to rank Smith as a true QB1 for the first week of the season.
Jared Cook, Tight End, St. Louis Rams (vs Arizona Cardinals)
Statistics: Seven Receptions, 141 yards and two touchdowns
It looks like Sam Bradford has found himself a new favorite target. First-year Ram Jared Cook tallied the most fantasy points and receiving yards for a tight end on Sunday, beating out Vernon Davis. Overall, he's currently the No. 1 fantasy tight end, right ahead of Julius Thomas. Not a shabby first game in St. Louis.
Colin Kaepernick, Quarterback, San Francisco 49ers (vs Green Bay Packers)
Statistics: 27/39, 412 yards, seven rushes, 22 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions
How can you not be impressed by Colin Kaepernick's performance on Sunday. With Green Bay bent on taking the run away from him, Kaepernick picked apart its defense with elite precision. His performance ranked right behind what Peyton Manning did on Thursday night, which is amazing in of itself. As it is, Kaepernick cemented his status as one of the best young fantasy quarterbacks in the league.
Eli Manning, Quarterback, New York Giants (at Dallas Cowboys)
Statistics: 27/42, 450 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions
While New York's performance was damn bad in the grand scheme of things, those who own Eli Manning in fantasy leagues couldn't have been happier. He finished with the second-most fantasy points among quarterbacks on Sunday. Touchdown passes of 70, 18 and 10 yards to Victor Cruz were among Manning's crucial plays.
