Fantasy Football Week 10: Top 25 Matchup Related Performances

Time to take a look at the top 25 matchup related fantasy performers of Week 10. Again, this isn't all about how a particular player performed this past week. Instead, it takes into account who that player went up against and gives us all a better understanding of what to expect moving forward.

Quarterback
Player Team Yards TD INT PTS Opp. Ranking
Matthew Stafford Detroit 329 3 1 24.5 Minnesota #14
Joe Flacco Baltimore 341 4 1 29.7 Oakland #24
Sam Bradford St. Louis 275 2 0 19.0  San Francisco #5
Matt Ryan Atlanta 411 3 1 26.6 New Orleans #31
Drew Brees New Orleans 298 3 1 21.8  Atlanta #19

Stafford has now had four solid fantasy outings in his last six games after struggling a great deal through the first three weeks. Detroit's starting quarterback is currently seventh among quarterbacks in fantasy points. His 24.5 fantasy points in Week 10 was third behind Flacco and Ryan. With that in mind, it is important to note that Stafford went up against a pretty damn solid Minnesota pass defense.

On the other hand, Flacco and Ryan ate apart weak defensive secondaries in the form of the Oakland Raiders and New Orleans Saints respectively. While I expect solid fantasy production from Ryan on a consistent basis as the the fourth best at his position thus far in 2012, Flacco is more of a wildcard here. He is on the outside looking in when it comes to QB1 conversations, ranking 13th among quarterbacks in fantasy points. More importantly, Baltimore's quarterback struggles both on the road and against defenses that rank in the top half against the pass. Be aware of the matchups when making a decision on him moving forward.

While Bradford had a solid performance against what had been an elite San Francisco 49ers pass defense, don't be fooled in expecting him to provide this type of production moving forward. The 49ers played their worst defensive game in over two years on Sunday. Bradford's performance is more of an indictment on that unit than anything else. As always, Brees is a must start no matter the defense he is going up against.

Running Back
Player Team Rush Yds Total Yds TD PTS Opp. Ranking
Fred Jackson Buffalo 80 115 2 21.5 New England #9
Adrian Peterson Minnesota 171 176 1 25.6 Detroit #19
Chris Johnson Tennessee 126 134 1 19.4 Miami #6
Steven Jackson St. Louis 101 127 1 18.7 San Francisco #7
Arian Foster Houston 102 117 1 17.7 Chicago #5

Jackson might have had a solid performance against the New England Patriots, but he has been ruled out of Thursday's game against the Miami Dolphins with a concussion. It goes without saying you are going to have find an alternative at your RB2 or FLEX position in Week 11 if you have him on your roster. The good news is that Jackson should be back and ready to go the following week against the Indianapolis Colts.

Yesterday I wrote an article focusing on the amazing recovery of one' Adrian Peterson from a serious kneed injury late last season. What Minnesota's running back has done is nothing short of amazing. It really doesn't matter who the future Hall of Fame running back is going up against, you can expect a top tier RB1 type of production from him. As indicated in that article, Peterson has now put up at least 100 total yards in eight straight games this season.

Johnson probably had the most surprising performance of Week 10 among running backs. He went up against a Miami rush defense that was ranked in the top five at the time and came away looking golden. As has been the case all season, Johnson is just too inconsistent to count on weekly. While he does rank eighth among running backs in fantasy points, Johnson has tallied under 12 points six different times this season. With that in mind, he has picked it up recently. The former NFL Rushing Champion has tallied nearly 700 yards in his last five games. Don't look now, but Johnson could be returning to 2010 form.

Jackson played like a man possessed against San Francisco on Sunday. He broke, from my estimation, at least seven tackles, including a couple by Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman. You just don't see that every day. Not sure what to make of this either as San Francisco was just brutal on the defensive side of the ball. I would, however, look long and hard at him against the New York Jets in Week 11.

Wide Receivers
Player Team REC Yards TD PTS Opp. Ranking
Calvin Johnson Detroit 12 207 1 24.7 Minnesota #14
Sidney Rice Seattle 2 54 2 17.4 New York (J) #6
Cecil Shorts Jacksonville 6 105 1 16.5 Indianapolis #15
Danario Alexander San Diego 5 134 1 19.4 Tampa Bay #32
Torrey Smith Baltimore 2 67 2 18.7 Oakland #24

Megatron is back people. Calvin Johnson has now pushed himself up to the No. 6 overall ranking among wide receivers, just behind Reggie Wayne of the Indianapolis Colts. He has tallied 19 receptions for 336 yards in the last two games. This is bringing back memories of a four game stretch in 2011 that saw Johnson put up nearly 800 yards and six touchdowns. It is also important to note that he did this against a Vikings' pass defense that ranks in the top half of the NFL.

Cecil Short was one of my sleepers heading into Week 10 and he didn't disappoint. Despite getting most of his yardage in garbage time, the young receiver was still able to gain 105 yards on six receptions against a 15th ranked Indianapolis Colts pass defense. Following a difficult game against the Houston Texans this week, Shorts has some nice matchups in his next two outings against the Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills, both of whom rank in the bottom 12 against the pass.

Tight End
Player Team REC Yards TD PTS Opp. Ranking
Greg Olsen Carolina 9 102 2 22.2 Denver #10
Jimmy Graham New Orleans 7 146 2 26.6 Atlanta #19
Tony Gonzalez Atlanta 11 122 2 24.1 New Orleans #31
Dennis Pitta Baltimore 5 67 1 12.7 Oakland #24
Kyle Rudolph Minnesota 7 64 1 12.4 Detroit #8

I was mentioned that I was "pure" when Tony Gonzalez was dunking the basketball for CAL two decades ago. This just goes to show just how productive the future Hall of Fame tight end has been over such an extended period of time. Despite a costly drop on fourth down late in Atlanta's loss to the Saints, Gonzalez put up more ridiculous fantasy numbers. It is important to note, however, that he did it against a New Orleans secondary that has given up a ton of points to opposing tight ends this season.

On the other hand, both Jimmy Graham and Greg Olsen put up some huge numbers against decent defenses on Sunday. Both are TE1 options this season, but Olsen's performance came as a major surprise. I would love to see him actually live up to that potential, but inconsistency remains somewhat of an issue.
