Fantasy Football Week 11: Ranking the Quarterbacks

It’s Week 11 now, and I’m finally realizing that ranking the quarterbacks has been much tougher than I initially realized. Outside of the top three guys this season (Manning, Rodgers and Luck) quarterback has waivered a ton through the first half of the season.

In any given week, it seems like Brian Hoyer or Josh McCown could magically jump into the top five, and predicting what will happen after the top three guys has been much tougher than I expected heading into the year.

Still, there’s some favorable matchups to be had this week, and enough consistent performances that owners have a decent idea of who will wind up inside the top 12 at week’s end.

1. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos (STL)

No matter how good St. Louis has been up front this year, Manning is matchup-proof. He’s being used in every league, no matter what. Emmanuel Sanders is a beast, and Julius Thomas is still on pace to have one of the best seasons ever for a tight end. It’s tough to move him out of the top spot.

Projected Statistics: 350 yards, four touchdowns

2. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers (PHI)

Rodgers has the best quarterback rating of anyone in football right now. He’s thrown 16 touchdowns in his past five games (including a six-touchdown game against the Bears on Sunday), and he has Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson to throw to. Like Manning, there’s just no reason to move Rodgers this week.

Projected Statistics: 350 yards, four touchdowns, one interception

3. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts (NE)

Luck is the only quarterback besides Manning to have a consistency rating of 100 percent, per our advanced metrics (paid subscription required). Coming off of a bye week, Luck is facing a defense that has allowed 16 passing touchdowns in nine games. This game has serious playoff implications in terms of future seeding, and Luck will come to play (as he always does).

Projected Statistics: 330 yards, four touchdowns, one interception

4. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints (CIN)

For has bad has Brees has been in close situations and from a decision-making standpoint, his fantasy value has stayed about the same. He’s the third most consistent fantasy quarterback this season, and has had at least 17 fantasy points in each of his past four games. Jimmy Graham has also gotten back into the offense, catching at least five passes in each of his past three games.

Projected Statistics: 430 yards, two touchdowns, one interception

5. Tom Brady, New England Patriots (IND)

This is the highest I’ve had Brady all year. It might be a little optimistic against a surprisingly feisty defense, but Brady has been on fire lately, scoring 20 or more points in every game since Week 4. New England’s offense is clicking right now, and the Brady-to-Rob Gronkowski connection is as good as ever.

Projected Statistics: 400 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions

6. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers (OAK)

It’s really tough to just avoid seeing the -3 Rivers put up in Week 9 prior to his bye week, but prior to that, Rivers scored 19 or more points in five of his eight starts. He’ll return to form against an Oakland defense that is allowing the seventh most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, per our fantasy against rankings. The Chargers also might have Ryan Mathews back for this game, which would help bolster the running game and take some pressure off Rivers.

Projected Statistics: 360 yards, two touchdowns

7. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks (KC)

At this point, Wilson’s fantasy value is almost completely derived from running the ball. Wilson has three 100-yard rushing games this season, and has scored a rushing touchdown in four of his past six games. However, this week, Wilson’s passing should come back to him a bit against a Chiefs defense that has allowed 14 passing touchdowns this season. The Chiefs have been good against the pass, but I just find it unlikely that Wilson doesn’t throw a passing touchdown for the third consecutive game.

Projected Statistics: 240 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, nine carries, 85 rushing yards

8. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons (CAR)

Ryan certainly hasn’t been setting the world on fire, but he has been good enough to at least be in the top 10 this week against a bad passing defense. Carolina has allowed the fourth most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, and through one half Monday night, Mark Sanchez has 182 yards and a touchdown versus the Panthers. Ryan should have an easy go of it in this one.

Projected Statistics: 305 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions

9. Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers (ATL)

Like Wilson, Newton has really struggled to throw the ball in the pocket this year, especially given his awful pass protection, but retains fantasy value from his rushing ability. Prior to Monday, Newton had scored two rushing touchdowns in his past four games, and does have one 100-yard rushing day under his belt. Atlanta has already allowed a rushing touchdown to a quarterback this season, and has allowed the seventh most passing yard of any team.

Projected Statistics: 250 yards, one touchdown, seven carries, 30 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown

10. Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers (NYG)

In terms of fantasy, Kaepernick has actually been borderline unstartable in the past three games, but don’t let that deter you again this week. The Giants just allowed 100 rushing yards to Russell Wilson, and while Kap hasn’t been rushing nearly as often as Wilson, he does have four games with at least 30 rushing yards. As far as matchups go, Kaepernick and the 49ers could do much worse than a floundering Giants team.

Projected Statistics: 240 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, five carries, 35 rushing yards
