Let’s jump right into it. This week’s “Sit These Wide Receivers” consists of these players.
Greg Jennings, Minnesota Vikings
Jennings has only one double digit scoring game this season and that was way back in week four. He had two touchdowns against Pittsburgh and those were the only touchdowns he received all season. This week does not look to be anywhere near his favor as the Vikings travel to Seattle to play the Seahawks where they have only given up one touchdown to opposing receivers at home. It doesn’t make it any easier when receivers are seeing a different quarterback under center every other week. On a good offense with a good quarterback, Jennings can be a solid play in any week. But since he is on a bad offense with a bad quarterback, there is just no hope to start him in any league.
Projection: Four receptions, 32 yards, zero touchdowns
Eric Decker, Denver Broncos
It is hard to believe that I would ever think about sitting a Broncos wide receiver the way that offense has been all season. But with Decker, he is one of those players who can either have a big fantasy day, or have little impact in standard fantasy leagues. In PPR leagues, Decker is always worth a start because he averages just over 5 catches per game. This week the Broncos take on the undefeated Chiefs in a division rivalry game. The Chiefs defense is nothing to mess with and will bring the heat to a banged up Peyton Manning. So I look to see Manning utilize quick outs to Wes Welker and screen passes to Demaryius Thomas a lot in this game which leaves out Decker. At least for this week Decker needs to be on the bench for all standard league teams.
Projection: Three receptions, 38 yards, zero touchdowns
Josh Gordon, Cleveland Browns
This week I have Gordon on the bench pretty much based off of what his performance was earlier in the season when these two teams first met. Back in week four against Cincinnati, Gordon had four catches for 71 yards. That isn’t bad at all but in standard leagues that isn’t too impressive. Also in that game the Bengals did not give up a touchdown to the Browns wide receivers. This week the game is in Cincinnati where the Bengals haven’t given up a receiving touchdown at home since week three. It will be tough for Gordon to find the end zone but I do expect him to put up similar numbers to his week four performance. The Bengals have had back to back embarrassing losses in overtime so I also believe that they will do everything in their power to shut down the Browns offense.
Projection: Six receptions, 64 yards, zero touchdowns
Victor Cruz, New York Giants
This is another surprise to be suggesting to sit but what has Cruz done in the past five games? His value is great in PPR because Eli Manning loves to throw to him but in standard leagues he has been ice cold. If you look at the teams he played the past five games (Raiders, Eagles, Vikings, Bears, Eagles), all of them have pretty weak defenses. Cruz has been getting plenty of targets and receptions but cannot find the end zone. You would think that he would have at least ONE touchdown against those weak defenses but he does not. The yards are there and the receptions are there but the touchdowns are not and that is what makes wide receivers valuable in standard leagues. This week the Giants play the Packers who have another weak defense. It seems like a good week to start Cruz but when you look at the stats vs. weak defenses, I’m not pressing my luck. Cruz will be on my bench.
Projections: Five receptions, 71 yards, zero touchdowns
Marques Colston, New Orleans Saints
Finally Colston had a big game. Against the Cowboys he put up over 100 yards and a touchdown. For those who didn’t give up on him and still started him, congratulations. But believe me when I tell you this will not happen again at least for this week. The Saints host the 49ers in the Superdome on Sunday. The 49ers defense has played exceptionally well even though they couldn’t pull out a win last week against the Panthers. Granted, the Saints are at home and Drew Brees love to light it up down in the bayou. But Colston hasn’t done enough for me to trust him to start even though he had a big week. I do believe Brees may look his way a little more but nothing too significant.
Projection: Three receptions, 28 yards, zero touchdowns
