This week features a division matchup of two talented, workhorse running backs, Doug Martin of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Michael Turner of the Atlanta Falcons. Turner, usually a fantasy-stud, has been inconsistent this season, showing flashings of his former brilliance, and then regressing again into mediocrity. Martin, on the other hand, has busted onto the scene in a big way and has been a huge lighting-rod for the Buccaneers. Who will come out on top? Lets take a look and find out.
This matchup is pretty one sided, and these two things will be the biggest deciding factors on Sunday:
1. Run Defense
Through the first 11 weeks, the Buccaneers have the best run-defense in the league. They’re holding opposing teams to a meager 82 yards per game, and a league best 3.4 yards per carry.
On the flip side, The Falcons are ranked 26th, allowing 131 yards per game, and a whopping 5 yards per carry.
This means we can expect Tampa Bay to pound the ball with Martin, who should see 25-plus carries, as well as a few targets in the passing game.
2. Pass Defense
Atlanta comes into this week ranked seventh in the league in pass-defense, allowing a respectable 216 yards per game while grabbing 11 interceptions (9th in NFL).
Tampa Bay, on the other hand, is allowing a league worst 312 yards per game, ranked dead last at 32nd. The Buccaneers' secondary has allowed receivers to make big plays all season, and the rushing-front has failed to put pressure on quarterbacks, giving them too much time in the pocket.
Matt Ryan and the Falcons will look to capitalize on this, and will probably pass twice as much as they hand the ball off to Turner.
Martin is the hands-down favorite this week. He should have another electric performance and challenge Adrian Peterson for best Running Back of week 12. Turner will still be a solid number two back or flex player for your roster, and you shouldn’t worry too much about replacing him.
Week 12 Fantasy predictions: Martin 28 points, Turner 12 points.
