Fantasy Football Week 14: Top 25 Matchup Related Performances

The first week of fantasy football playoffs in most leagues is now officially in the books. If you went up against the Seattle Seahawks defense, I am going to assume you were eliminated in relatively short order. If you were lucky enough to start that unit (eight forced turnovers and two touchdowns scored) you are probably riding high right now.

As it is, not a whole heck of a lot went according to plan this past weekend, especially as it relates to matchup related performances. Not being an appearance on this list are the likes of Arian Foster, Peyton Manning, Doug Martin, Robert Griffin III and Calvin Johnson; five players that sit among the leaders at their respective positions in fantasy points.

In fact, a lot of players that a vast majority of fantasy owners didn't suit up had a major impact. Without further ado, let's take a look at this weekly article.

Quarterbacks
Player Team Yards TD INT PTS Opp. Ranking
Cam Newton Carolina 403 3 0 37.1 Atlanta #16
Nick Foles Philadelphia 408 2 0 31.9 Tampa Bay #32
Philip Rivers San Diego 203 3 0 20.3 Pittsburgh #1
Tom Brady New England 302 4 0 28.4 Houston #19
Matt Ryan Atlanta 342 2 1 19.7 Carolina #12

Cam Newton just continues to make those of us who wrote him off earlier look really bad. He put up another 37 points in a Week 14 upset over the Atlanta Falcons and now ranks second behind only Robert Griffin III in fantasy points this season. Over the course of his last three games, Newton has tallied over 1,000 total yards, 10 touchdowns, zero interceptions and 104 fantasy points.

The performance of Nick Foles just goes to show us that being an expert when it comes to fantasy football means nothing. The rookie quarterback is owned in less than five percent of ESPN fantasy leagues, but tallied the second-most fantasy points in Week 14.  His 408-yard, two-touchdown performance against a lowly Tampa Bay Buccaneers was astonishing to those of use who caught some of the action. It will be interesting to see how Foles produces during the final three games and what happens to Michael Vick

Philip Rivers is yet another player that most of us didn't have on our radar this past week. He was going up against the No. 1 overall pass defense in the NFL in the form of the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Not only did Rivers lead San Diego to victory, he put up three touchdowns and didn't throw an interception. While it was a workmanlike 200 yard performance, Rivers still did net 20 fantasy points. We already know how he performs in December, so I wouldn't put it past him to keep this up through the remaining weeks of the season.

Running Backs
Player Team Rush Yds Total Yards TD PTS Opp. Ranking
Adrian Peterson Minnesota 154 170 2 29.0 Chicago #12
Jamaal Charles Kansas City 165 165 1 22.5 Cleveland #18
Marshawn Lynch Seattle 128 128 3 30.8 Arizona #30
Knowshon Moreno Denver 119 167 1 22.7 Oakland #26
Ray Rice Baltimore 121 136 1 19.6 Washington #7

With 400 rushing yards in the next three games, Adrian Peterson will have completed the greatest comeback in the recent history of the National Football League. The Future Hall of Fame running back would then surpass 2,000 rushing yards just a year after blowing out his right knee. That is some amazing stuff right there.

In terms of fantasy production, Peterson remains the No. 1 overall running back. He has tallied over 1,100 rushing yards and 164 fantasy points in his last seven games. To put that into perspective, those 164 points are more than all but eight other running backs have tallied all season. Peterson was at it once again on Sunday against a solid Chicago Bears defense. He netted 170 yards and two scores in a must-win scenario for Minnesota.

Everything that Seattle did on Sunday in its 58-0 destruction of the Arizona Cardinals turned to pure gold. ##Marshawn Lynch averaged over 10 yards per attempt and put up three scores on just 11 touches. Talk about production. Surprisingly enough, Lynch is now the No. 5 overall running back in the NFL in fantasy points.

I have always said that Knowshon Moreno is a better fit in the Denver Broncos offense under Peyton Manning than Willis McGahee. It took Denver to go up against a disastrous Oakland Raiders defense for that point to be proven. Moreno tallied 167 total yards and a score with McGahee riding the pine after a season-ending knee injury. It will be interesting to see how the former first-round pick performs for the remainder of the season.

Wide Receivers
Player Team REC Yards TD PTS Opp. Ranking
Danario Alexander San Diego 7 88 2 20.8 Pittsburgh #1
Roddy White Atlanta 9 117 1 17.7 Carolina #12
Mike Wallace Pittsburgh 7 112 2 23.2 San Diego #22
Brandon Marshall Chicago 10 160 1 22.0 Minnesota #18
Vincent Jackson Tampa Bay 6 131 1 19.1 Philadelphia #15

Danario Alexander is the new Laurent Robinson and Kevin Ogletree all wrapped into one. The St. Louis Rams' castoff has come up aces since joining the San Diego Chargers in mid-season. He is fourth among all wide receivers in fantasy points over the course of the last four games, tallying a ridiculous 360 yards and four scores. Not bad for someone that was riding his sofa cushions looking for a job back in October.

The rest of the names here are well known within the fantasy football community. Roddy White continues to prove himself as a consistent WR1 option. He now ranks eighth among wide receivers in fantasy points this season after tallying 117 yards and a score against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. This now represents the sixth consecutive season that the veteran wide receiver has tallied top 10 fantasy numbers at his position.

Mike Wallace has had somewhat of a slow go at it this season. Following a lengthy holdout, there were many that came to the conclusion that the young wide receiver was in for a lost year as it relates to fantasy production. He wasn't in the top 20 in fantasy points through the initial 12 games of the year, but that changed dramatically against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. Wallace notched two scores and 112 yards in route to the best overall fantasy performance for a wide receiver in Week 14. You can expect him to keep this up with Ben Roethlisberger back in the fold.

Tight Ends
Player Team REC Yards TD PTS Opp. Ranking
Aaron Hernandez New England 8 58 2 17.8 Houston #19
Anthony McCoy Seattle 3 105 0 10.5 Arizona #5
Greg Olsen Carolina 4 55 1 11.5 Atlanta #16
Clay Harbor Philadelphia 6 52 1 11.2 Tampa Bay #32
Dennis Pitta Baltimore 5 46 1 10.6 San Diego #22

eDraft was extremely solid in put predictions for Week 14, especially considering what a wacky week it was. Jessia Kleinschmidt recommended that you are Aaron Hernandez during her tight end preview by indicating that he would have a great performance against the Houston Texans. I then indicated prior to yesterday's game that he would be among the best fantasy performers of the night. Hernandez went on to tally two scores in the first half and absolutely dominate the tight end rankings for the week.

Outside of Hernandez's performance, there isn't a whole lot to see here. Greg Olsen continued his stud-like run as of late, but the tight end position continues to lack that necessary production to help most of us out. Heck, even Jimmy Graham isn't putting up stellar numbers.

Defenses
Team Sacks INT Turnovers TD PTS Against Opp. Ranking
Seattle Seahawks 3 4 8 2 0 Arizona Cardinals #32
New York Giants 1 2 4 1 27 New Orleans Saints #3
Tennessee Titans 4 2 2 0 27 Indianapolis Colts #7
Cleveland Browns 5 1 2 1 7 Kansas City Chiefs #22
Minnesota Vikings 2 2 3 1 14 Chicago Bears #28
